GENEVA, N.Y. – William Smith College's Katie Grottenthaler scored with 2:53 left in the fourth quarter and lifted the Herons to a 10-9 non-conference win against the Hamilton College Continentals at William Smith's Boswell Field on Wednesday, March 4.
Season Update
- Hamilton (0-2 overall) has opened the 2026 season with two nationally ranked teams.
- The 10th-ranked Herons (2-0) opened their season with an 18-8 win against SUNY Geneseo on Feb. 25.
How It Happened
- With the score tied at 9-9, one of the Continentals received a yellow card with 3:41 remaining, and they had to play down a player for the next two minutes. Grottenthaler notched the game-winner 48 seconds later. Hamilton didn't take another shot the rest of the way.
- Mia Falco gave William Smith a 1-0 lead 69 seconds into the first quarter. The Continentals' Maddigan Leifer '26 proceeded to score two goals 37 seconds apart and passed to Sophia Wright '28 for another goal and a 3-1 lead with 10:40 to go in the first.
- The Herons responded with a 7-0 run for an 8-3 advantage with 8:44 left in the second quarter.
- Grace MacLean '29 finally ended Hamilton's goal drought as she barely beat the horn that ended the second quarter. MacLean added another tally 1:55 into the third quarter, Leifer scored 1:46 later and Wright converted a free-position attempt that pulled the Continentals within 8-7 with 7:39 remaining in the third. Grottenthaler put William Smith back up by two goals with 3:44 to go in the quarter.
- Wright fed Julia Lee '27 for a goal with 10:46 left in the fourth, and Wright drew Hamilton even with 8:52 remaining. It was the first time the score was tied since late in the first quarter.
Notes
- Leifer finished with three goals, an assist and three draw controls. She has 55 goals and 68 points in her career with the Continentals.
- Wright also registered three goals and an assist. She leads the team with seven points after finishing last season with six.
- MacLean (two goals) posted her first multi-goal game.
- Lee scored her 52nd career goal.
- Lauren Garringer '29 picked up her first collegiate assist.
- Hamilton's Eliza Schwarz '27 made nine saves and scooped up a career-high five ground balls.
- Grottenthaler and Taryn Luzi scored three goals apiece for the Herons. Katey Connolly won six draw controls and Janey Sypeck caused five turnovers.
- The Continentals scored on all four of their free-position shots.
- William Smith held a 26-16 shot advantage.
