Women's lacrosse falls at No. 2 Wesleyan, Schwarz '27 makes 12 saves

Continentals held the Cardinals to a season-low eight goals

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Wesleyan University held the Hamilton College Continentals to one goal over the last three quarters and the Cardinals pulled out an 8-3 NESCAC win at Wesleyan's Smith Field on Saturday afternoon, March 28.
 

Season Update

  • The Continentals (4-5, 2-3 NESCAC) were coming off a tough 6-5 double-overtime loss against Colby College on March 21.
  • The Cardinals (7-0, 4-0) scored a season-low eight goals against the Hamilton defense.
 

How It Happened

  • Wesleyan opened the scoring at 8:28 in the first quarter.
  • Sophia Wright '28 put Hamilton on the board on a Natalie Mascitti '29 assist with 3:45 left. Wright's 14th goal of the season came off a give-and-go connection through the middle of the arc.
  • Maddigan Leifer '26 recorded her 15th goal of the season and gave Hamilton a 2-1 lead with 35 seconds remaining. Wright hit a crashing Leifer through the middle.
  • Wesleyan scored twice in the second quarter and concluded the first half with a 3-2 lead.
  • Eliza Schwarz '27 came up big in the first half, turning away five of the eight shots on goal by the Cardinals, including a free-position shot.
  • Wesleyan brought its lead to two at 12:13 in the third quarter.
  • Kristin Vosswinkel '27 cut Hamilton's deficit in half on a goal with 7:41 to go on another Wright assist (her 11th of the season). Wright's pass came from the right side of the arc and hit Vosswinkel, who spun through the middle and tucked it by the right post for her sixth goal of the season. The Continentals didn't score again over the final 22 minutes.
  • Wesleyan restored its two-goal advantage 1:23 later and led 5-3 after three quarters. The Cardinals added two goals in the opening minute of the fourth quarter and Addie Cummings completed the scoring with 9:33 left.
 

Notes

  • Leifer extended her point streak to 14 games dating back to last season. She leads the team with 15 goals and has 66 in her career.
  • Wright finished with three points and leads the Continentals with 25.
  • Schwarz made 12 saves. She leads the NESCAC with a .567 save percentage and 8.89 saves per game.
  • Mascitti recorded her ninth assist and is fourth on the team with 14 points.
  • Claire Neumann '28 scooped up a season-high four ground balls.
  • Grace Martucci '28 caused three turnovers and leads the team with 12.
  • Avery Trach '27 recorded a career-best four caused turnovers.
  • Cummings finished with three points for Wesleyan. Lindsey Diomede boasted five caused turnovers, four ground balls and three draw controls.
  • The Cardinals held advantages in shots (29-10), ground balls (25-15) and draw controls (9-4).
 

Next Game

The Continentals travel to Bates College (4-6, 0-5) for another conference contest on Saturday, April 4 at noon.
