Softball drops two against Utica in first home contests of 2026 season

Santana '26 drove in two runs in game one for the Continentals

CLINTON, N.Y. – Utica University's Mya Strong drove in three runs in game one and Kari Graziano pitched a two-hit shutout in the nightcap as the Pioneers swept a non-conference doubleheader against the Hamilton College Continentals at Hamilton's Loop Road Athletic Complex on Wednesday, March 25.

Season Update

  • The Continentals (5-7 overall) entered the afternoon with a three-game win streak from the end of their Florida trip.
  • Utica (5-9), which is a member of the Empire 8 Athletic Conference, dropped both ends of a twinbill at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on March 21.

Game 1 (Utica wins, 7-5)

How It Happened

  • It was a quiet start to the opener as the first run was scored by Hamilton in the bottom of the third inning. Lauren Farace '29 drove a fly ball to deep right-center field for a double with two outs. Miranda Mosqueda '28 followed with a single to center that drove in Farace.
  • The Pioneers sent 10 batters to the plate in the top of the fourth and scored five unearned runs on four hits and three walks. Utica added two more runs in the top of the sixth for a 7-1 advantage.
  • The Continentals scored two runs with two outs in the bottom of the inning. Alison Zorn '26 singled through the right side and drove in Hadley Rogers '26, who had singled. The second run scored on a fielding error by the pitcher.
  • Hamilton tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh. Mosqueda led off and was promptly hit by a pitch in the helmet. Nikki Dyche '28 reached on a fielding error by the second baseman and both runners moved up on a passed ball. Sofia Santana '26 plated both of them with a single down the right field line and pulled the Continentals within 7-5. A single by Rogers put the tying run on base with one out, but the lead runner was cut down on a double steal.

Notes

  • Rogers finished with two hits and was 8-for-15 in her last four games.
  • Santana posted the third multi-RBI game of her career.
  • Mosqueda's hitting streak reached six games. She has scored a run and driven in a run in five straight contests.
  • Zorn recorded her fourth hit and second RBI of the season.
  • Farace's double was her first collegiate extra-base hit.
  • Jess Chieco '29 singled in her only at bat and moved her batting average over .300 (.316).
  • Strong went 2-for-2 with two walks and a run scored for the Pioneers. Maggie Habernig pitched a complete game.
  • Utica drew nine walks.

Game 2 (Utica wins, 3-0 in 5 inn.)

How It Happened

  • The Pioneers scored all three of their runs and had all four of their hits in the top of the fourth inning.
  • Hamilton had four base runners on two singles and two walks, but only one reached second base.

Notes

  • Lydia Mirabito '26 singled and walked for the Continentals. Mirabito is hitting .333 (6-for-18) with a .520 on-base percentage, and she leads the team with seven walks.
  • Alexis Mayer '26 picked up her 86th career hit.
  • Yael Everett '28 walked and stole a base. The walk was the first one drawn by Everett this season.
  • Aubrey Purvis '27 pitched three hitless innings in the doubleheader.
