CLINTON, N.Y. – Colby College's Charlotte Michener scored four goals, including the game winner 54 seconds into the second sudden-victory overtime period, and the Mules edged the Hamilton College Continentals 6-5 in a tense NESCAC clash at Hamilton's Steuben Field on Saturday afternoon, March 21.
Season Update
- The Continentals (4-4, 2-2 NESCAC) came into the weekend with a three-game win streak. Hamilton has given up a total of 17 goals in its last four contests.
- Colby (2-3, 1-3) was coming off a 10-4 loss at Wesleyan University on March 14. Two of the Mules' losses are against teams currently ranked in the top three in Division III.
How It Happened
- Colby scored both goals in the first quarter and never trailed, although the Continentals did tie the score twice.
- Maddigan Leifer '26 and Grace MacLean '29 scored 100 seconds apart in the opening three minutes of the second quarter and drew Hamilton even. The Mules notched the next two goals for a 4-2 lead.
- Michaela Scannevin '27 sliced the Continentals' deficit in half with just under a minute left in the second and Hamilton trailed 4-3 at the break.
- Colby went back up by two on a player-up goal early in the third quarter, but was held scoreless for the next 32 minutes.
- Julia Lee '27 made it 5-4 on a free-position goal with 8:13 remaining in the third. Sophia Wright '28 tied the score 58 seconds into the fourth quarter after a fantastic pass from Leifer. Wright's shot bounced high in the air and trickled over the goal line.
- The Continentals mustered four shots the rest of regulation but none were on goal.
- The teams combined for just three shots in the first five-minute overtime period. Hamilton's Eliza Schwarz '27 stopped a shot by Kristin Podgorni just before the period ended. The Mules won the draw at the start of the second overtime and never gave up possession.
Notes
- Leifer extended her point streak to 13 games dating back to last season with a goal and an assist. She leads the team with 14 goals.
- Wright scored her 13th goal and leads the Continentals with 22 points.
- Schwarz made 11 saves. She's third in the NESCAC with a .562 save percentage and leads the conference with 8.50 saves per game.
- Scannevin scored her sixth goal.
- MacLean chipped in her 13th tally and has at least one goal in all but one game this spring.
- Lee found the back of the net for the 10th time this season and the 61st time in her Hamilton career.
- Claire Neumann '28 scooped up three ground balls and caused two turnovers.
- Joselyn Silva scored the other two goals for Colby. Gisele Uva won three draws and caused two turnovers. Gigi Peloso and Brynna Hall combined to stop four shots.

The Continentals travel to Wesleyan (6-0, 3-0) for another conference contest on Saturday, March 28 at noon.
