Men's lacrosse held scoreless in fourth quarter in setback at Amherst

Williams '28 made 20 saves in his first start in goal for the Continentals

AMHERST, Mass. – Amherst College's Willie Doyle scored three goals and added an assist in the Mammoths' 9-5 NESCAC win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Amherst's Pratt Field at Lehrman Stadium on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 28.

Both teams were playing their 2026 season opener.
 

How It Happened

  • The 14th-ranked Mammoths scored four goals in the first 4:01 of the fourth quarter and turned a 5-5 tie into a 9-5 advantage. Doyle notched the go-ahead goal 56 seconds into the fourth and made it 7-5 with 12:49 left. Alex Vlacich, who had the assist on the previous goal, scored with 11:27 remaining. Max Youssefnia completed the scoring 28 seconds later.
  • Carson Kraus '28 gave Hamilton a 1-0 lead with 6:37 to go in the first quarter. It turned out to be the lone goal of the first half for the Continentals. Doyle tied the score with 2:32 left in the first and Amherst scored three more in the second quarter. Bob Gross' goal with 4:51 remaining put the Mammoths up 4-1.
  • Kraus' second goal pulled Hamilton within two 1:38 into the third quarter. After an Amherst tally restored the Mammoths' three-goal lead, the Continentals ran off the next three and tied the score. Frank Coyle '26 had two of the three goals and Kraus had the assist on a man-up goal by Finn Vaccaro '29. Coyle's second goal with 4:09 to go in the third turned out to be Hamilton's last.

  • Jack Williams '28 made 20 saves in his first start for the Continentals.
  • Kraus' three points on two goals and an assist was one off his career high.
  • Coyle's two goals gave him 43 in 30 career games.
  • Vaccaro's goal was the first of his collegiate career.
  • Ryan Olivo '28 finished with two assists for his second multi-assist game at Hamilton.
  • Sam Sneider scooped up four ground balls and caused two turnovers for Amherst. Brooks Catlin stopped nine shots.
  • The Mammoths won 12-of-18 faceoffs and owned a 49-32 shot advantage.
 

Next Game

The Continentals travel to St. John Fisher University (3-0 overall) for a non-conference game on Tuesday, March 3 at 3:30 p.m.
