WATERVILLE, Maine – After a thrilling first period with seven goals, Hamilton College rattled off four unanswered tallies and the Continentals secured a 7-4 NESCAC road victory against the Colby College Mules inside Colby's Jack Kelley Rink on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 7.
Season Update
- Nationally ranked No. 2 Hamilton (16-2-2, 12-1-1 NESCAC) has won eight out of its last nine games.
- Colby (9-9-2, 5-8-1 NESCAC) continued its struggles at home as the Mules have lost their last three contests at Kelley Rink.
How It Happened
- The Continentals trailed 4-3 after the first 20 minutes, but they wasted no time erasing their deficit in the second period. Just 34 seconds in, Justin Biraben '27 saw the puck rebound to him right in front of the net, and he backhanded it past the goaltender and leveled the score.
- Hamilton took its first lead with 1:53 to go in the second. A beautiful passing play by Connor Thue '29 and Biraben was capped off by Noah Leibl '27, who fired the puck into the back of the net from close range. Leibl scored again at 3:16 of the third period for a 6-4 advantage.
- Biraben sealed the win with his second goal 4:46 into the third. During a 5-on-3 opportunity, Leibl fed a pass across the low slot and Biraben was waiting at the far post to tap it in for the 7-4 lead.
- The first period was electric with six goals scored in the opening eight minutes. Matthew Macdonald picked up the puck on a fast break and had his shot saved by goaltender Aksel Reid '27, but the rebound fell to Jayden Grier, who stabbed the puck into the back of the net 1:11 into the first.
- Hamilton leveled the score at 4:32. Alex Danis '26 fired a shot that got redirected to Max Bulawka '26, and Bulawka rifled a shot past goaltender Cooper Rautenstrauch.
- The score was not tied for long as Colby quickly punched back with two goals within 71 seconds of Hamilton's equalizer. Reese Farrell scored 14 seconds after Bulawka's goal, and Grier grabbed his second during a power play at 5:43 when he redirected Ben Morgan's shot.
- The Continentals produced a similar response as they scored two goals 41 seconds apart and leveled the score at 3-3. Devon de Vries '27 notched the first one at 7:04. For the third goal, Michael Gallary '28 slipped a pass to Carson Hall '26 on a breakaway and he fired a wrist shot that found the top corner.
- With less than a minute to go in the first, Colby Browne picked up the puck off a faceoff and rifled a shot that went through the defense and into the goal, restoring Colby's lead at 4-3.
Notes
- Biraben scored two goals and added two assists for a career-high four points.
- Leibl registered his first two-goal and three-point game at Hamilton.
- Devon de Vries scored his sixth goal and his first since he had one the first time the Continentals played the Mules on Jan. 10. He sits fourth in the NESCAC with 24 points.
- Bulawka scored his third goal and Hall his second this season.
- Thue picked up two assists and has four of his nine helpers against Colby.
- Gallary boasted his first career multi-point game with a pair of assists.
- Jackson Krock '26 (assist) has at least one point in six of the last seven games.
- Tyler Bloomfield '28 relieved Reid in goal early in the first period and made 12 saves in 54-plus minutes. Bloomfield is 3-0 with a 1.03 goals against average and .942 save percentage in three games.
- Hamilton tied its season high of seven goals.
- The Continentals outshot the Mules 72-35 overall and 36-18 for shots on goal.
- Colby had the slight edge in faceoffs, winning 36-of-68.
- Hamilton is 5-0-1 in the last six meetings with the Mules.
- The Continentals were 1-for-4 on the power play and have scored on more than 24 percent of their 78 chances.
