Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey | | Jim Taylor

No. 2 men's hockey edges Tufts on goals by Zimmerman '26, Varmecky '28

Continentals still hold a five-point lead in the NESCAC standings with three games left

MALDEN, Mass. – Hamilton College's Liam Varmecky '28 and Ben Zimmerman '26 scored goals and Aksel Reid '27 made 24 saves as the Continentals held on for a 2-1 NESCAC win against the Tufts University Jumbos inside Tufts' Malden Valley Forum on Friday night, Feb. 13.

Season Update

  • Nationally ranked No. 2 Hamilton (17-2-2, 13-1-1 NESCAC) maintained its five-point lead in the conference standings with three games remaining. The Continentals defeated the Jumbos 3-1 at home on Jan. 16 and swept the season series.
  • Tufts (10-10-1, 7-8-0) won twice last weekend – both times against Connecticut College.

How It Happened

  • Varmecky gave Hamilton a 1-0 lead at 10:23 in the first period. Zach Walsh '29 passed the puck along the blue line just inside the Continentals' offensive zone to Varmecky for a wrist shot from above the right faceoff circle that found the back of the net.
  • Hamilton went up by two goals early in the second period on one of its nine power-play opportunities. The Jumbos tried to clear the puck down to the other end of the ice but Zimmerman picked it off in the neutral zone near the red line along the right-side boards. He carried the puck into the attacking zone, through the right circle and was still unmarked as he drove towards the crease. He moved the puck from his forehand to his backhand and flipped it past the goaltender from close range 3:09 into the second.
  • Max Resnick sliced Tufts' deficit in half on a power-play goal 6:32 into the third period. Trace Norwell and Ethan Ullrick had the assists.
  • The Jumbos pulled their goaltender for a sixth skater with a little more than 90 seconds left in the third, and the move resulted in increased pressure on the Continentals' defense. Tufts took four shots, including two on goal, and Reid stopped them both. The last save came in the final 10 seconds, and Hamilton escaped with the one-goal win on the road.

Notes

  • Varmecky, who is a defenseman, scored his first goal this season and the second of his career with the Continentals.
  • Zimmerman notched his third goal of 2025-26 and the 20th of his Hamilton career.
  • Reid leads the NESCAC with a 1.60 goals against average and is second with a .932 save percentage.
  • Noah Leibl '27 picked up an assist for the second straight game and has nine this season.
  • Walsh – another defenseman -- registered his first collegiate assist.
  • John Wojciechowski '28 blocked four shots and is tied for the conference lead with 31.
  • The Jumbos won 44-of-71 faceoffs.
  • Gus Bylin turned away 27 shots, including 13 in the second period when the Continentals had seven power plays.
  • Hamilton has won four of the last five meetings with Tufts.
