No. 5 field hockey shuts out Rochester, McMahon '29 scores twice

Janssen '28 tied a program record with her fifth shutout this season for the Continentals

CLINTON, N.Y. – Hamilton College's Brighton McMahon '29 scored two goals and Kelly Janssen '28 made five saves in the Continentals' 2-0 non-conference win against the University of Rochester Yellowjackets at Hamilton's Goodfriend Field on an unseasonably warm early evening on Tuesday, Oct. 13.

Season Update

  • The fifth-ranked Continentals (10-2 overall), who are fourth in the NCAA Power Index (NPI) rankings, won three times on their four-game homestand.
  • Rochester (8-5) has dropped three of its last four games. The Yellowjackets were shut out for the first time this year.

How It Happened

  • Hamilton held Rochester without a shot in the first quarter, but the Yellowjackets had a fantastic scoring chance about five minutes into the second. Hannah Mehta took a shot that was stopped by Continentals defender Isabelle Nahon '27 and Rochester was awarded a penalty stroke. For the second game in a row, Janssen denied the shooter from the penalty stroke dot. Janssen thwarted Erin Foley's attempt on a kick save with her left foot.
  • It looked as if the teams would go to the break in a scoreless tie, but McMahon came up with some last-minute magic. Nahon took a restart after a foul near midfield and sent a long pass forward to McMahon, who gained possession at the broken line circle. McMahon entered the shooting circle on the right wing, ran around a defender, deked the charging goalkeeper on a move to her left, and threaded a shot inside the right post with 37 seconds left.
  • McMahon struck again 2:52 into the third quarter. Eleanor Cooper '28 inserted on a penalty corner to Nahon at the top of the shooting circle and she smashed the ball towards the cage. A Yellowjacket player deflected it but the ball continued towards the left post where McMahon popped a high shot past a defender and into the back of the cage.
  • Rochester dominated play the rest of the second half as the Yellowjackets had 12 shots and five corners in the final 30 minutes. Morgan Clarke '28 made a defensive save for the Continentals about two minutes after McMahon's second goal.

Notes

  • The multi-goal game was the first of McMahon's Hamilton career. She's second on the team with six goals and 14 points.
  • Nahon picked up her sixth assist, 22nd point and third defensive save. She's second in the NESCAC in points and tied for fourth in assists.
  • Janssen tied the program record with her fifth shutout this season. She turned away five shots and blanked the opponent for the second game in a row. Janssen is second in the conference with a save percentage of .841 and she lowered her goals against average to 1.01.
  • Clarke leads the NESCAC with six defensive saves.
  • The Continentals held a 9-4 shot advantage and a 4-2 edge in corners in the first half. Rochester put the pressure on in the second half after falling behind by two goals, owning a 12-2 shot advantage and getting five corners to Hamilton's two.
  • The Continentals have won six of the last seven meetings with the Yellowjackets.
