No. 5 field hockey edged by Bowdoin in clash of top 10 NESCAC opponents

Continentals were shut out for the first time this season

BRUNSWICK, Maine – Bowdoin College's Allie Straub scored the goal and Eva Filipponi made three saves in the Polar Bears' 1-0 NESCAC win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Bowdoin's Ryan Field on a windy and cool Saturday, Oct. 17.

Season Update

  • Hamilton (10-3, 5-3 NESCAC) was fifth in the Division III Top 25 coaches poll and fourth in the NCAA Power Index (NPI) rankings. The Continentals, who had won their last two games, were shut out for the first time this fall.
  • The Polar Bears (10-2, 5-2) were ninth in the coaches poll and sixth in the NPI rankings. Bowdoin recorded its sixth straight shutout.

How It Happened

  • Straub scored with 5:21 left in the third quarter when she redirected a ball played into the middle of the shooting circle by Charlotte Crawford. Hamilton goalkeeper Kelly Janssen '28 got a piece of the shot with her foot but the ball snuck through and trickled over the goal line.
  • The Continentals had their chances to get on the scoreboard as well. A little less than six minutes into the first quarter, Morgan Clarke '28 sent a lifted ball over the midfield line off a restart from Hamilton's defensive end. Brighton McMahon '29 caught up to the ball behind the defense near the broken circle and drew Filipponi off her line. McMahon passed to her right to Evelyn Butorac '27 for a sharp-angle shot on the open cage, but it rolled wide to the right.
  • In the third quarter the Continentals were awarded a penalty corner and a shot by Clarke ended up in the back of the cage with 9:07 remaining. The Polar Bears asked for a review and the officials determined the ball hit a Hamilton player's foot and disallowed the goal.

Notes

  • The teams combined for just 10 shots and seven penalty corners.
  • Clarke was credited with her NESCAC-leading seventh defensive save.
  • Janssen stopped three shots and had her shutout streak of 159 minutes come to an end. She still owns a 1.02 goals against average and .837 save percentage.

Next Game

The Continentals are on the road again for another conference contest at Williams College (9-3, 5-2) on Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 5 p.m.
