Men's basketball bested by Amherst in NESCAC road contest

Continentals were limited to a season-low 37 points

AMHERST, Mass. – Amherst College leaned on its defense and three-point shooting to stifle the Hamilton College Continentals in the Mammoths' 65-37 NESCAC win inside Amherst's LeFrak Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 24.
 

Season Update

  • Hamilton (5-13, 1-3 NESCAC) was coming off a thrilling last-second win at SUNY Geneseo on Jan. 20.
  • The Mammoths (13-5, 2-2) won for the sixth time in their last eight games.
 

How It Happened

  • Hamilton jumped out to a lead early in the first half. Jack Stowell '27 had the ball at the top of the key, drove down the lane, and finished with a tough layup that put the Continentals up 5-0 with 16:17 remaining.
  • Amherst quickly responded after its slow start with an 8-0 run that was capped by Zane Adnan's layup courtesy of an inbounds pass with 13:50 to go.
  • Amherst ended the half with a 20-4 run. K.J. Neville splashed a three-pointer with just under a minute to go and made the score 28-9 at halftime.
  • In the second half, Alister Walsh '29 scored five straight points for Hamilton. Walsh hit a three-pointer from the wing and made an impressive fadeaway jumper that made the score 45-23 with 10:11 to go.
  • The Mammoths extended their lead to 30 points at 65-35 with 44 seconds left on a shot from beyond the arc by Johnny McCain.
 

Notes

  • Stowell paced Hamilton with seven points.
  • Jalen Reese '27 contributed a team-high seven rebounds for the Continentals.
  • Amherst's Elias Chin posted 13 points, eight boards and five steals. Marc Garraud chipped in 12 points off the bench. Neville handed out five assists.
  • The Mammoths' defense held the Continentals to 30% (15-50) from the field including 13.6% (3-22) from beyond the arc.
  • Amherst made 11 steals, which led to 14 points off 18 Hamilton turnovers.
  • The Mammoths shot 10-of-28 from three-point range.

Hamilton plays Bowdoin College (11-6, 2-2) at home on Friday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m.
