MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Hamilton College's
Sarah Wagner '28 scored the game-winner a minute into the sudden-victory overtime period and lifted the Continentals to a 5-4 NESCAC win against the Wesleyan University Cardinals inside Wesleyan's Spurrier-Snyder Rink on Friday night, Jan. 16.
Season Update
- Hamilton (7-5-1, 3-3-1 NESCAC) picked up a pair of road wins over the last four days, including a 6-0 victory at William Smith College on Jan. 13.
- Wesleyan (2-11-1, 0-7-0) is currently mired in a four-game losing streak.
How It Happened
- In overtime the Continentals quickly gained control of the puck. Lydia Bullock '26 drove at the defense and a defender poked the puck away only for it to fall right to Wagner, who buried her shot and capped a miraculous comeback.
- Hamilton trailed 4-2 and had just killed a penalty that ended with 1:12 left in the third period. The Continentals immediately pulled goaltender Evie Sheridan '26 for a sixth skater and it paid off. Within seconds after the extra skater hit the ice, a blocked pass by Cuora Sullivan '26 found its way to Sophie Berghammer '26 and she picked out the top corner with a shot from just across the blue line. That made the score 4-3 with 1:05 remaining.
- With time winding down and the Continentals in desperation mode, Sadie Klein '29 fed a pass to Bullock, who fired a shot from the right side of the offensive zone. The shot went through defenders and past the goaltender, tying the score at 4-4 with just 25 seconds left.
- The teams scored two goals apiece in the first period. Klein opened the scoring at 5:28 but the Cardinals were up 2-1 less than 90 seconds later after goals by Sam Galanek and Dylan Green.
- Wesleyan was on the power play late in the first period, but a giveaway at the blue line by the Cardinals allowed Bullock to pick up the puck. She took the puck down the ice, went around the goaltender, and scored with a backhand shot that leveled the score at 2-2.
- After a scoreless second period, Wesleyan regained its lead 1:57 into the third. Bree Anderson got the puck at the top of the offensive zone and fired a long-distance shot that found the top corner.
- A little more than two minutes later, the puck found its way to Aiko Sims off a faceoff in the Cardinals' offensive zone. Sims steered it around the goaltender and into the back of the net for the 4-2 advantage.
