Men's soccer plays No. 3 Middlebury to scoreless tie in NESCAC opener

Montesano Scheibe '27 recorded his first career shutout for the Continentals

CLINTON, N.Y. – Hamilton College's Peter Montesano Scheibe '27 stopped all six shots on goal and the Continentals played the Middlebury College Panthers to a 0-0 tie at Hamilton's soggy Love Field on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 6.

Season Update

  • Hamilton (1-0-1 overall) was playing its NESCAC and home opener in 2025.
  • Middlebury (1-0-1, 0-0-1) was ranked third in the United Soccer Coaches Division III Top 25 preseason poll.

How it Happened

  • Despite the lack of goals, there was plenty of action as the teams combined for 25 shots, 16 corner kicks, four yellow cards and a red card.
  • One of the Panthers was sent off with a red card after picking up his second yellow of the match, which gave the Continentals a one-player advantage for the final 14:40 of the second half.
  • Hamilton immediately went on the offensive as Oliver Mylon '29 passed ahead to Aedan Burke '26 on a counter-attack in the 78th minute. Burke hammered a low shot from just inside the 18-yard box, but Joey Waterman came off his line to shut down the breakaway opportunity.
  • Less than two minutes later, Griffin Weidner '26 gained some separation in the Continentals' offensive third and one-timed a through ball from the edge of the box. Once again, Waterman came way out to cut down Weidner's angle and made the diving save.
  • Neither team had a shot on goal in the final 10 minutes.

Notes

  • Montesano Scheibe posted his first career shutout and hasn't allowed a goal in 166-plus minutes this season.
  • Hamilton shut out Middlebury for the first time in the last 17 matches.
  • The Continentals' last scoreless tie was Oct. 12, 2024 at Connecticut College.

Next Match

Hamilton hosts Williams College (1-0-1, 1-0-0) for another NESCAC match on Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 4:30 p.m.
