Men's soccer allows first goal this season in 1-0 setback against Williams

Continentals were playing their second straight Top 5 NESCAC opponent

CLINTON, N.Y. – Hamilton College outshot the Williams College Ephs but the Continentals didn't find the back of the net in a 1-0 NESCAC setback on a sunny afternoon at Hamilton's Love Field on Tuesday, Sept. 9.

Season Update

  • Hamilton (1-1-1, 0-1-1 NESCAC) played its second straight match against a top-10 team. The Continentals are receiving votes in this week's United Soccer Coaches Division III Top 25 poll.
  • Nationally ranked No. 5 Williams (2-0-1, 2-0-0) posted its first shutout in three matches.

How it Happened

  • There was plenty of intensity in this matchup as the physical play led to 30 fouls and six yellow cards -- three for each team.
  • Late in the first half Williams forced goalkeeper Peter Montesano Scheibe '27 to make two outstanding diving saves and keep the match scoreless.
  • After an evenly matched beginning to the second half, the Ephs earned a free kick a few yards outside the 18-yard box in the 65th minute. Montesano Scheibe made an excellent point-blank save to deny Sam Gibson's initial header, but the Continentals couldn't clear the ball and Gibson stabbed the rebound into the back of the net.
  • Hamilton earned two late corners, but Brady Hyland '29 had his close-range header saved by Aleix Anglada.
  • Hamilton's last chance came on a free kick in the 89th minute when Troy Miller '28 had a decent look, but his header flashed wide of the left post.

Notes

  • Prior to Gibson's goal, Hamilton had held its opponents scoreless for more than 240 minutes this season.
  • The Continentals held a 15-12 shot advantage.
  • Montesano Scheibe finished with three saves.
  • The Continentals featured a starting lineup with four first-years, the most in a match this season.

Next Match

Hamilton travels to Wesleyan University (2-1-0 overall) for another NESCAC match on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 2 p.m.
