Field hockey drops heartbreaker in shootout against No. 1 Middlebury

Nahon '27 scored her first career goal for the Continentals

CLINTON, N.Y. – Middlebury College's Grace Keefe was successful on her shootout attempt and the Panthers edged the Hamilton College Continentals 2-1 at Hamilton's rain-soaked Goodfriend Field on Saturday, Sept. 6.
 

Season Update

  • Hamilton (1-1, 0-1 NESCAC) was playing its 2025 home opener.
  • Nationally ranked No. 1 Middlebury (2-0, 1-0) scored 10 goals in its season opener.
 

How It Happened

  • The first quarter was dominated by Middlebury as the Panthers earned four corners and took five shots compared to Hamilton's zero.
  • Hamilton had several scoring opportunities in the second quarter including four corner opportunities taken by Eleanor Cooper '28 that led to shots by Becky Felker '26, Morgan Clarke '28 and Isabelle Nahon '27.
  • Middlebury goalie Izzy Redzic recorded two saves and quelled the Continentals' flurry as the teams went into the break in a scoreless tie.
  • The Panthers' Megan Fuqua fired a shot that was saved by Kelly Janssen '28 only 54 seconds into the third quarter.
  • Midway through the third, Lilly Truchon '26 put a shot on goal that was saved by Redzic.
  • Middlebury converted a corner opportunity with 6:38 left in the third as Fuqua scored her third goal of the season off an assist from Ellie Harrison.
  • The Continentals ended the Panthers' shutout bid with 10:40 remaining in the fourth quarter when Olivia Waruch '28 started a penalty corner with a pass to Nahon, whose shot found the back of the cage.
  • Neither team had a great scoring look in the first overtime with Hamilton's two shots going wide.
  • In the second extra period, Middlebury earned one corner opportunity and got off one shot while Hamilton was held without a shot.
  • The shootout period began with nine consecutive misses between the two teams before Keefe ended it.
 

Notes

  • Middlebury outshot Hamilton 15-10 and held a 9-6 advantage in corners.
  • Starting goalie Abby Griffin '26 didn't allow a goal and made two saves in the first half.
  • Waruch and Nahon recorded their first collegiate points.
 

Next Game

The Continentals travel to the University of Rochester (5-0) for a non-conference matchup at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 10.
