Men's soccer cruises to 4-0 win at Oswego in 2025 season opener

Weidner '26 led the Continental offense with a goal and an assist

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Hamilton College's Griffin Weidner '26 posted a goal and an assist and the Continentals pulled away early in the second half for a 4-0 non-conference victory against the SUNY Oswego Lakers at Oswego's Laker Turf Stadium on Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 2.

Season Update

  • Hamilton played its 2025 season opener.
  • The Lakers (0-1-1 overall), who are members of the SUNYAC, are winless through their first two home matches of the season.

How It Happened

  • Brady Hyland '29 gave the Continentals a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute. Oswego cleared a Hamilton corner kick out of the 18-yard box but Jameson Mannix '26 popped the ball forward towards the goal. Hyland ran under it and scored on a high header from the center of the box about 10 yards out.
  • The Continentals still held their one-goal edge at the half but it didn't take long to extend that lead after the break. Goalkeeper Peter Montesano Scheibe '27 took a free kick from just past midfield that sailed into the 18. Weidner's long header found the top-right corner of the net for a spectacular goal in the 52nd minute.
  • Hamilton scored again on a similar play a little more than three minutes after the second goal. Montesano Scheibe took another long free kick from around midfield and Weidner headed it near the edge of the 18. Patrick Ferrare '27 played a brilliant one-touch from about six yards out near the right post that caromed off the bottom of the crossbar and came down over the goal line.
  • The Continentals made it 4-0 in the 66th minute following a corner kick. Oliver Mylon '29 took the short pass off the corner and played the ball from the left side into the middle of the 18. Sean Curran '29, who is listed at 6 feet, 5 inches, scored Hamilton's third header goal into the left side of the net.

Notes

  • Weidner recorded his first three-point match for the Continentals.
  • Montesano Scheibe, Hyland, Curran, Mylon and Mannix registered their first career points at Hamilton.
  • Ferrare scored his fifth career goal.
  • Montesano Scheibe and Finn Wheeler '27 combined on the shutout. Wheeler needed to make four saves in just 13-plus minutes.
  • Head Coach Brendan Ujvary picked up his first career win after 10 years as an assistant coach under Perry Nizzi.
  • The Continentals dominated the action with a 28-4 shot advantage and a 7-4 edge in corner kicks. Oswego didn't record its first shot until the 77th minute.
  • Hamilton is 5-1-2 in its last eight meetings with the Lakers.
