CLINTON, N.Y. – Hamilton College's
Luke Kurzum '27 threw for a career-high 315 yards and tied a career best with three passing touchdowns in the Continentals' 27-13 win against the Bowdoin College Polar Bears at Hamilton's Steuben Field on a warm Saturday afternoon, Sept. 27 during Homecoming Weekend.
Season Update
- The Continentals (1-2 NESCAC) have won two of their last three home games going back to the end of last season.
- Bowdoin (0-3) lost its fourth straight game, including the 2024 season finale.
How It Happened
- The first three possessions ended with points. The Polar Bears had the ball for most of the first half of the first quarter when their 15-play drive ended with a 37-yard field goal by Caden Perry with 7:39 left.
- Hamilton came back and took the lead with an 80-yard touchdown drive. Alastair Orr '28 ran 31 yards down to the Bowdoin nine and, with the Continentals running the hurry-up offense, scored on the next play. Orr took the handoff and started to run right before he cut back to the middle and powered into the end zone with 4:23 remaining. Carmelo Velardo '27 added the extra point for a 7-3 advantage.
- The Polar Bears regained the lead on a 46-yard touchdown pass from Soren Hummel to Michael Wolfendale with 23.4 seconds to go. Perry's PAT made it 10-7. An interception by Josh Richards '27 was wiped out by a defensive holding penalty.
- Bowdoin's next seven drives ended with a missed field goal, four punts, a turnover on downs and an interception.
- The next play after Perry's 44-yard attempt came up short, Kurzum found Matthew Kearns '28 behind his defender at the Polar Bears 40. Kearns managed to stay on his feet and raced into the end zone for a 73-yard touchdown with 8:16 left in the second quarter. Velardo booted the extra point and Hamilton was back in front, 14-10.
- The Continentals moved the ball to the Bowdoin nine-yard line in the closing seconds of the first half, but a holding penalty ate up the rest of the time and Hamilton took its four-point lead into the locker room.
- It didn't take long for the Continentals to extend their lead after the break as they marched 75 yards in eight plays. Kurzum ripped a pass over the middle to Liam Leonard '26, who caught it at the five and avoided a big hit at the goal line for a 22-yard touchdown reception. Velardo's extra-point gave Hamilton an 11-point advantage at 21-10 with 10:43 remaining in the third quarter.
- The next four drives ended with punts. On the Polar Bears' first drive of the fourth quarter, they went for it on fourth down at the Continentals 43, but James Bailey '27 sacked Hummel for a loss of 11 yards.
- Kurzum went for it right away as he pump-faked and found Kearns, who had beaten his defender again, down the middle at around the 20. Kearns sprinted untouched into the end zone for a 46-yard touchdown and a 27-10 lead with 12:21 to go.
- Bowdoin's next two drives ended with an interception by Nico Obregon '27 and a 30-yard field goal by Perry with 7:07 left. The ensuing onside kick was recovered by Jack Francesa '27.
