Football drops to 1-3 this season with setback at Wesleyan

Laverty '28 scored his first touchdown for the Continentals

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Wesleyan University's Matt Fitzsimons threw five touchdown passes in the second quarter and the Cardinals went on to a 56-14 NESCAC win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Wesleyan's Corwin Stadium at Andrus Field on a sunny and unseasonably warm Saturday afternoon, Oct. 4.
 

Season Update

  • Hamilton (1-3 NESCAC) was coming off a 27-13 win against Bowdoin College on Sept. 27.
  • The Cardinals' (3-1) only loss was by two points at Tufts University on Sept. 20.
 

How It Happened

  • After a scoreless first quarter, Wesleyan exploded for 35 points in the second. The Cardinals scored their first three touchdowns in a span of 3:21 and led 21-0 with 8:40 left. Fitzsimons had touchdown tosses to Donte Kelly (two), Blake Newcomb, Jake Saalfrank and Sam Wien. Dylan Connors also returned an interception 47 yards to the Continentals six-yard line and set up Wesleyan's third touchdown.
  • Hamilton's Luke Kurzum '27 completed a 10-yard pass for a touchdown to Jack Hoag '27 midway through the third quarter. Carmelo Velardo '27 added the extra point and made it 42-7.
  • The Continentals' backup quarterback Connor Laverty '28 ran 39 yards for the game's final score with 3:19 remaining in the fourth quarter.
 

Notes

  • Kurzum was 18-of-36 passing for 198 yards and his first two interceptions this year. He leads the NESCAC with 95 completions and 1,110 yards passing, and is second with eight touchdowns.
  • Hoag caught his second touchdown pass this year and the third of his Hamilton career.
  • Laverty scored his first touchdown with the Continentals.
  • Mat Bucher '27 was credited with a game-high eight tackles. Bucher is tied for ninth in the conference with 29 stops.
  • Fitzsimons was 20-of-23 for 365 yards passing. James McHugh ran for 52 yards and a score. Newcomb caught six passes for 130 yards and Kelly had six catches for 125 yards. Connors tied for the team lead with six tackles, and Vincent Lytle added six and a pass breakup.
  • The Cardinals racked up 28 first downs and 561 yards of total offense. Wesleyan was 5-of-8 on third down conversions.
