Volleyball falls to Bates, Trefren '28 smashes career-high 15 kills

Allen '27 is third in the NESCAC in blocks per set for the Continentals

CLINTON, N.Y. – Bates College's Jaime Bartley-Cohen posted 19 kills and the Bobcats defeated the Hamilton College Continentals in four sets (25-21, 25-19, 23-25, 25-18) inside Hamilton's Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 20.

Season Update

  • The Continentals (3-5, 0-2 NESCAC) also fell to visiting Tufts University in four sets on Sept. 19.
  • Bates (6-2, 1-1) rebounded from a four-set loss at Amherst College on Sept. 19.

How It Happened

  • In the first set neither team led by more than three points until the Bobcats broke a 21-21 tie with four straight. Malina Young ended the set with a kill.
  • Bates ran off seven consecutive points and took a 9-3 lead in the second set. Hamilton didn't get closer than five points the rest of the way. A service error by the Continentals gave the Bobcats a two sets-to-none lead.
  • Much like the first set, a three-point lead was the most for either team in the third. Hamilton's Grace Seaman '29 snapped a 23-23 tie with a kill, and Ayzlinn Trefren '28 finished off the set with another spike.
  • Bates erased a 9-5 deficit with eight straight points in the fourth set. After the Continentals closed to within two at 13-11, the Bobcats ticked off six more in a row and cruised from there. Kills by Anais Reneaum and Kate Norry closed out the set and the match.

Notes

  • Trefren paced Hamilton with a career-high 15 kills and added 15 digs.
  • Elodie McGeiver '27 chipped in a season-best 12 kills.
  • Grace Jansen '29 handed out 19 assists and Lucy Proud '29 contributed 17 assists and two aces.
  • Caitlin Allen '27 led the defense at the net with five blocks and is third in the conference with 1.18 per set.
  • Zua Vang '29 came up with 22 digs – the third time she has finished with more than 20 this season.
