Women's soccer battles with undefeated Tufts before falling 2-1

Continentals received an own goal from their opponent for the second straight match

MEDFORD, Mass. – Tufts University's Reese Birch and Elsi Aires scored goals in the first half and the Jumbos hung on for a 2-1 NESCAC win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Tufts' Bello Field on Saturday, Sept. 20.
 

Season Update

  • Hamilton (2-3-1, 0-3-1 NESCAC) was coming off a 1-0 non-conference win over Utica University on Sept. 17.
  • Nationally ranked No. 8 Tufts (5-0-0, 3-0) remained the only undefeated team in the NESCAC.
 

How It Happened

  • In the 13th minute Birch bent a shot into the right side of the goal.
  • Aires' chip shot found the back of the net in the 28th minute for a 2-0 Jumbos advantage.
  • Hamilton's Nieve Tonna '26 posted five saves in the first half.
  • The Continentals ramped up their attack in the second half with Lila Sullivan '29 recording three shots on goal.
  • A Hamilton free kick in the 65th minute resulted in a Tufts own goal and cut the Continentals' deficit in half.
  • Hamilton managed three shots, including two on goal, the rest of the way. The Continentals earned a corner kick in the final minute.
 

Notes

  • Tonna faced a season-high 28 shots and matched her season best with eight saves.
  • Tufts' five-match win streak to start the year matches its longest since 2018.
 

Next Match

Hamilton continues its road play with a non-conference match against Babson College (2-0-3) on Sunday, Sept. 21 at noon.
