AMHERST, Mass. – Amherst College's Marek Hill threw for 236 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 109 more and another score in the Mammoths' 23-13 NESCAC win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Amherst's Pratt Field at Lehrman Stadium on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 20.
Season Update
- Hamilton (0-2 NESCAC) was coming off a 24-17 setback against Williams College on Sept. 13.
- The Mammoths (1-1) rebounded from a 26-23 loss in double overtime at Bates College in their season opener.
How It Happened
- The Continentals trailed 23-0 after three quarters but scored on both of their drives in the fourth.
- A 40-yard punt by Amherst's Efe Ilgar pinned Hamilton at its own one-yard line. The Continentals proceeded to march 99 yards in 11 plays, including a 16-yard touchdown pass from Luke Kurzum '27 to Colin Kelter '26 with 9:30 left. Kurzum was 8 of 11 for all 99 yards on the drive. Hamilton's two-point conversion try was unsuccessful.
- Kurzum capped an eight-play, 71-yard drive with a five-yard scoring toss to Jack Hoag '27 with 2:13 remaining. Kurzum kept the drive alive with a four-yard scramble to the Mammoths 10 on fourth down-and-three. Carmelo Velardo '27 added the extra point.
- The Continentals' best chance to put points on the board during the first 45 minutes came on their opening drive of the second half when they went 64 yards in six plays and had first-and-10 at the Amherst 11. The Mammoths defense stiffened and a 33-yard field goal attempt by Velardo came up short.
- Amherst found the end zone on the game's first possession as Hill scampered 57 yards for a touchdown.
- A 20-yard field goal by Hudson Fulcher-Melendy gave the Mammoths a 10-0 lead midway through the second quarter. Amherst went up 16-0 on a one-yard touchdown pass from Hill to Carter Jung with just 13 seconds to go in the half. The PAT was blocked and the Mammoths took the 16-point lead into the locker room.
- Hill found Jung again for 26 yards and a touchdown with 5:51 left in the third quarter. Fulcher-Melendy added the extra point.
Notes
- Kurzum finished 27 of 44 for 299 yards. He set a career high in passing yards for the second straight week.
- Matthew Kearns '28 set career bests with seven catches for 100 yards.
- Kelter's touchdown catch was his first at Hamilton.
- Hoag's TD reception was his first since Sept. 16, 2023, and the second of his career with the Continentals.
- Josh Richards '27 topped the Hamilton defense with six tackles.
- John Young '26 was credited with a blocked kick on an extra-point try.
- Ian Redzepagic '28 batted away two passes.
- Sam Gerber led all Amherst receivers with eight catches and 82 yards. Jung added six receptions for 58 yards. Hill was 25 of 34 passing and averaged 12.1 yards per carry. Carson Skotak had a team-high six stops and Jackson Duncan and Kemit Fisher recorded one sack apiece.
- The Mammoths finished with 166 yards rushing while the Continentals had 14.
