No. 24 field hockey shreds No. 10 Wesleyan for four goals in road win

Higgins '26 is tied for the NESCAC lead with four assists after getting two more Saturday

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Four Hamilton College players scored a goal and Sammy Higgins '26 had two assists in the Continentals' 4-1 NESCAC win against the Wesleyan University Cardinals at Wesleyan's Hicks Field on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 13.
 

Season Update

  • Nationally ranked No. 24 Hamilton (3-1, 1-1 NESCAC) picked up its second consecutive win over a ranked opponent.
  • The 10th-ranked Cardinals (3-1, 0-1) suffered their first loss after opening the season with three non-conference wins.
 

How It Happened

  • The Continentals began their scoring barrage with 7:50 left in the first quarter on a goal by Brighton McMahon '29 off an assist from Higgins.
  • Outstanding Hamilton defense held the Cardinals to two shots in the second quarter.
  • Claire Tratnyek '26 scored an unassisted goal with 10:05 remaining in the second.
  • Lilly Truchon '26 extended the lead to 3-0 with 3:11 to go before the half right after a shot by teammate Morgan Clarke '28 was stopped by Audrey Pace.
  • Wesleyan's Meera Patel found the back of the cage midway through the third quarter.
  • The Continentals responded with 2:56 left in the third and restored their three-goal advantage. Higgins played a ball towards the cage and Eva Bell '29 knocked it out of the air and past goalie Keira O'Flynn.
  • The teams combined for 11 shots but no goals in the fourth quarter.
 

Notes

  • Higgins is tied for the NESCAC lead with four assists.
  • McMahon leads the team with five points on two goals and an assist.
  • Bell notched her first collegiate goal.
  • Truchon scored her 17th career goal and Tratnyek collected her seventh.
  • Abby Griffin '26 made two saves in another scoreless first half and improved her record to 2-0 for the Continentals. Griffin hasn't allowed a goal in 120 minutes this fall.
  • Kelly Janssen '28 came in for Griffin at the start of the third quarter and stopped four shots.
  • Hamilton has won nine of the last 10 meetings with the Cardinals.
 

Next Game

The Continentals host St. Lawrence University (3-2) on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 5 p.m. on Goodfriend Field.
