Football falls to Williams, Kurzum '27 throws for career-high 298 yards

Teams combined to score 31 points in an entertaining fourth quarter

CLINTON, N.Y. – Williams College's Jon Oris ran for 101 yards and two touchdowns in the Ephs' 24-17 NESCAC win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Hamilton's Steuben Field on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 13.

Season Update

Both teams were playing their 2025 season opener.

How It Happened

  • Williams scored 10 points in the second quarter and led 10-0 after three. Oris found the end zone from five yards out on the second play of the quarter, and Leonardo Maiuol booted a 26-yard field goal 54.6 seconds before halftime.
  • The Continentals' best chance to put points on the board in the first half was a 17-play drive that took more than nine minutes off the clock, but Carmelo Velardo '27 was wide left on a 43-yard field goal attempt with 5:10 left in the second quarter.
  • Hamilton took the opening kickoff of the second half and had the ball for half the third quarter. The 14-play, 68-yard drive stalled at the Ephs five-yard line and Velardo's 22-yard field goal try sailed wide right.
  • Williams quarterback Owen Johansen scored on a 13-yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter and Maiuol's extra point made it 17-0. It was the first of four straight scoring drives as the teams combined to score 31 points in the fourth.
  • It took the Continentals two plays and 21 seconds to respond. Luke Kurzum '27 found Alastair Orr '28 open over the middle and Orr ran untouched to the end zone for a 78-yard touchdown. Velardo added the PAT.
  • The Ephs restored their 17-point lead on their next possession. Williams gained 75 yards on six running plays, including another five-yard run to the end zone by Oris with 11:29 remaining.
  • Hamilton came right back down the field for another touchdown. Kurzum was 7-of-8 passing for 70 yards on the drive, which ended with a two-yard catch in the end zone by Matthew Kearns '28. Velardo's extra point pulled the Continentals within 10 at 24-14 with 7:24 to go.
  • After Hamilton forced a punt by the Ephs, the Continentals marched deep into Williams territory again. This time Hamilton was forced to settle for a 26-yard field goal by Velardo with 1:40 left.
  • Still needing seven points for a tie, the Continentals tried an onside kick, but the ball touched a Hamilton player before it traveled the required 10 yards and the Ephs took over. Oris ran for 10 yards on the first two plays, and Williams ran out the clock.

Notes

  • Kurzum threw for a career-high 298 yards and completed 26-of-40 passes.
  • Orr finished with eight catches for 128 yards and his first career touchdown.
  • Kearns' touchdown reception was his first for the Continentals.
  • Liam Leonard '26 established career bests with five catches and 62 yards receiving.
