WATERVILLE, Maine – The Hamilton College Continentals split a pair of one-run games with the Colby College Mules in a NESCAC doubleheader at Colby Softball Field on Saturday, April 5.
Season Update
- Hamilton (10-4, 2-2 NESCAC) won the opener 5-4 in an extra-inning thriller.
- The Mules (9-7, 3-1 NESCAC) came back from down 8-3 to walk it off in the bottom of the seventh by an 11-10 score.
Game 1
How It Happened
- Hadley Rogers '26 started off the top of the eighth inning with a single up the middle and Yael Everett '28 reached on a throwing error that allowed pinch-runner Sofia Santana '26 to get to third base. A wild pitch brought Santana home with the go-ahead run.
- In the bottom half of the inning Emma Tansky '25 worked around a one-out walk and locked up the victory by getting the last out on a called third strike.
- Hamilton opened the first frame with a one-out walk by Tansky. The next hitter, Alexis Mayer '26, launched a home run to left field that put the Continentals in the driver's seat.
- Gabby Garrison '27 led off the top of the second with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a fielder's choice. Everett ripped a two-out double down the left field line that drove Garrison home for a 3-0 lead.
- The Mules finally got something going off Everett in the third when they opened the inning with a double and a triple. Another run crossed the plate on a fielder's choice to second base. After a stolen base and a sacrifice bunt put the tying run on third with one out, Tansky replaced Everett and ended the inning with two quick outs.
- Miranda Mosqueda '28, Tansky and Mayer began the fifth inning with consecutive walks and loaded the bases with nobody out. Jordan Merklin '26 sent a line drive to left field that brought Mosqueda home and expanded the Hamilton lead to 4-2.
- Colby responded in the bottom half of the fifth with a single off the pitcher's leg that drove in a run. The Continentals turned a double play on a ground ball to second base that killed the Mules' momentum.
- In the bottom of the seventh with Colby down to their final two outs, a sacrifice fly to center scored the tying run. A runner on third tried to take home on a bad throw but got caught in a rundown and the game went to extras.
Notes
- Mayer smacked her third home run of the season and drove in her 20th and 21st runs, both of which lead the team.
- Tansky (5-0) gave up two runs on six hits in 5.2 innings of relief.
- Everett notched two hits, including her second double of the year. It was her second straight multi-hit game.
- Mosqueda, Tansky and Mayer each walked twice while Kelsey Vadnais '28 and Nikki Dyche '28 walked once.
- Caroline DeSimone led Colby hitters going 3-for-3 with three runs and a triple. The top three hitters in the Mules' lineup accounted for seven of their nine hits.
Game 2
How It Happened
- Hamilton led 10-8 going into the bottom of the seventh but could not hold on to the lead. Colby opened the inning with a walk and three singles and tied the score. A sacrifice bunt and intentional walk loaded the bases, and a sacrifice fly to center field ended the game as the Mules avoided a sweep.
- Merklin started things off for Hamilton in the first inning with a leadoff walk and a stolen base. She eventually scored from second on a throwing error by an infielder.
- Four singles and a walk led to three runs for Colby in the bottom of the inning.
- Hamilton's Alison Zorn '26 and Mosqueda responded with RBI singles that tied the score at 3-3 in the second.
- A five-run third inning, highlighted by an Ella Heftved '25 RBI double and a two-run single by Mosqueda, put the Continentals up 8-3 for their largest lead.
- Colby did not hang their heads as it closed the gap to 8-7 in the bottom of the inning. The Mules responded with a three-run long ball after another run scored on a fielder's choice following three singles.
- In the top of the fifth Heftved singled with one out, stole second, went to third on an error and raced home on a wild pitch. The run was canceled out by Colby's run-scoring infield single in the bottom half.
- Hamilton made it 10-8 on a Colby fielding error that brought in pinch-runner Santana from third.
Notes
- Tansky (5-1) allowed four runs on eight hits and three walks in four more innings of relief.
- Mosqueda shined at the plate by going 2-for-5 with a season-high three RBI.
- Lydia Mirabito '26 went 2-for-4 and scored two runs. Mirabito has two hits in each of her last three games.
- Gaby Guerra '27 went 3-for-4 for the second three-hit game of her career.
- Heftved singled and doubled for her first multi-hit game this season. She also scored twice.
- Merklin walked twice, scored twice and stole three bases.
- Charlie Quinn '25 doubled and is tied for the team lead with three.
- The Continentals have a .356 team batting average.
- Hamilton has scored 10 or more runs five times this season.
