Softball takes two from Bates in NESCAC doubleheader sweep

Zorn ’26 ripped a double and a triple in game 1 for the Continentals

CLINTON, N.Y. – Hamilton College held off the Bates College Bobcats in a pair of tight, two-run NESCAC contests, and the Continentals completed the sweep at Loop Road Athletic Complex on Sunday, April 13.

Season Update

  • Hamilton (12-4, 4-2 NESCAC) has won three of its last four contests.
  • Bates (14-10, 6-6) has lost its last three games.

Game 1 (3-1, Hamilton)

How It Happened

  • After two scoreless innings, the Bobcats threatened in the top of the third. With the bases loaded and two outs, Alexis Mayer '26 raced toward the wall and caught a fly ball in deep center that ended the inning.
  • The Continentals built on the momentum of escaping the jam and scored a run in the bottom of the inning. Alison Zorn '26 led off with a triple to the gap in right-center field and Jordan Merklin '26 drove her in with a sacrifice fly.
  • Bates tied the score in the top of the fourth. Hamilton escaped another bases-loaded jam as the Continentals threw out a runner at home on a fielder's choice and got the next batter to line out to left and end the inning.
  • The Continentals regained the lead with a run in the fifth inning. With two outs, Ella Heftved '25 earned her second walk of the game, followed by a Merklin walk. Emma Tansky '25 loaded the bases with an infield single to shortstop and Miranda Mosqueda '28 drove in Heftved after Mosqueda was hit by a pitch.
  • Hamilton extended its lead to 3-1 with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Lydia Mirabito '26 led off and delivered a pinch-hit single up the middle, and Zorn smacked a two-out double to the left-center gap that drove in Mirabito.

Notes

  • Zorn recorded her third double of the season and added the first triple of her career.
  • Mirabito tallied her seventh hit of the season.
  • Heftved showcased her plate discipline with a team-high two walks out of the ninth spot in the lineup.
  • Tansky (6-1) pitched all seven innings and allowed one run on seven hits and five walks while striking out four. She also contributed offensively by going 2-for-3 at the plate.
  • Sophie Garber paced Bates with two hits.
  • Misora Hashiramoto knocked in the Bobcats' lone run on a single.
  • Delaney Rankin (9-3) allowed three runs on six hits, issued three walks and struck out four over six innings of work.

Game 2 (6-4, Hamilton)

How It Happened

  • The Continentals struck first with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Tansky hit a one-out single through the left side and moved to second on the next play. With two outs, Mayer came through with a clutch hit to right field that sent Tansky home.
  • Hamilton's offense came alive in the third inning with five runs. Mirabito started it off with a one-out single up the middle and after Merklin doubled to left-center, the Continentals had two runners in scoring position. Mirabito scored and Merklin moved to third on a wild pitch. With two outs, Mosqueda lined a drive past the diving third baseman that brought Merklin home. Mayer followed with a hard ground ball through the right side that eluded the reach of the center fielder, who tried to cut it off with a backhand attempt in right-center field, and allowed her to stretch it into a triple. Gaby Guerra '27 kept the rally going with a single up the middle that scored Mayer, and Nikki Dyche '28 finished the inning with a double that one-hopped the wall in the gap in right-center field and drove in the fifth run.
  • The Bobcats answered with a run in the top of the fifth on an RBI double.
  • After stranding two runners in the sixth, Bates mounted a comeback in the final inning with three runs. The Continentals finally escaped with the tying run at the plate as Teagan Graham '25 secured the win by recording her seventh strikeout for the final out.

Notes

  • Mayer drove in two runs and went 2-for-3 with her fifth triple of the season. She leads Hamilton with 19 hits on the year.
  • Merklin picked up her second double of the season.
  • Dyche drove in her seventh run of the season with her second double.
  • Guerra knocked in a run with her sixth hit of the season.
  • Mirabito, who singled in the third inning, has recorded hits in her last five games.
  • Tansky singled and ranks second on the team with 14 hits.
  • Graham (4-2) pitched all seven innings and gave up six hits and six walks. She recorded a season-high seven strikeouts.
  • Isabel Bettencourt led the Bobcats with two RBI and three hits, including a double.
  • Zariya Anderson finished with two hits, one of which was a run-scoring double.
