Softball swept in NESCAC doubleheader at Middlebury, Mayer '26 homers

Mosqueda '28 added four hits in the two games for the Continentals

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Middlebury College's Kristyn Carroll doubled in both games and scored four runs as the Panthers swept a NESCAC doubleheader against the Hamilton College Continentals at Middlebury's Softball/Baseball Complex on Saturday, April 19.

Season Update

  • Hamilton (12-6, 4-4 NESCAC) batted in the bottom of the inning even though the Panthers were the hosts. The games were originally scheduled to be held in Clinton but were moved to Middlebury due to the threat of inclement weather in Central New York.
  • The Panthers (21-9, 8-4 NESCAC) won Game 1 by a score of 5-3 and took the nightcap 8-2. The second game was stopped in the top of the sixth inning due to rain and darkness.

Game 1

How It Happened

  • Middlebury capitalized on a fielding error, wild pitch and passed ball to plate three runs in the first inning.
  • In the bottom of the first, Miranda Mosqueda '28 slapped a two-out single to left field. The next hitter, Alexis Mayer '26, showed off her power and launched a ball over the center field wall as the Continentals pulled within 3-2.
  • The Panthers tacked on an insurance run in the fourth and increased their lead to 4-2.
  • Mayer continued her strong performance with the bases loaded in the fifth with a hit to left field that drove Jordan Merklin '26 home, even though a runner was thrown out going from second to third. Middlebury added another run for a 5-3 lead in the seventh.
  • Mosqueda and Mayer led off the bottom of the inning with back-to-back singles and Hamilton had the tying run in scoring position with no outs. But the next three Continentals were retired on a comebacker to the pitcher and two infield popups as the Panthers clinched the win.

Notes

  • Mayer crushed her fourth home run of the year and had a team-leading three RBI.
  • Mosqueda finished 3-for-3.
  • Lydia Mirabito '26 singled and doubled.
  • Hamilton had 12 hits but left 10 runners on base.
  • Teagan Graham '25 (4-3) allowed three earned runs in 3.2 innings.
  • Aubrey Purvis '27 pitched 3.1 innings of relief and only allowed one earned run.
  • Middlebury's McKenna Lont (6-2) gave up nine hits but just one run in four innings of relief.

Game 2

How It Happened

  • Middlebury started off strong again with an RBI double that left runners on second and third with no outs. Hamilton's Yael Everett '28 pitched out of the jam and kept the score at 1-0.
  • Charlie Quinn '25 evened the score with a single that drove in Mosqueda, who had reached on an error. The Continentals took a one-run lead as Mayer, who walked, came home on a passed ball.
  • Hamilton held on to their one-run edge until the Panthers scored twice in the fifth. Middlebury added five insurance runs in the sixth. A bases-loaded walk and wild pitch allowed two runs to score. A three-run double cleared the bases and that's when the game was stopped.

Notes

  • Everett (1-2) surrendered four runs in five innings.
  • Ella Heftved '25 and Hadley Rogers '26 accounted for four putouts apiece, and Rogers was involved in a double play as well.
  • Mosqueda singled and finished the day with four hits.
  • Heftved picked up her fourth hit in her last 10 at-bats.
  • Cate Viola went 2-for-2 with two walks and three RBI for the Panthers.
  • Samantha Hausman (8-3) pitched all five innings and didn't give up any earned runs.
