CLINTON, N.Y. – Hamilton College's
Emma Tansky '25 tossed a shutout and
Alexis Mayer '26 hit a walk-off double in Game 1 as the Continentals split a NESCAC doubleheader with the Wesleyan University Cardinals at Hamilton's Loop Road Athletic Complex on Sunday afternoon, April 20.
Season Update
- Hamilton (13-7, 5-5 NESCAC) won the opener 1-0 in eight innings.
- The Cardinals (20-10, 9-5) have won five of their last seven contests after a 6-1 victory in Game 2.
Game 1
How It Happened
- The Cardinals picked up two quick outs in the bottom of the eighth, but the Continentals weren't finished yet. Miranda Mosqueda '28 kept the inning alive with a sharp single up the middle and set the stage for Mayer, who delivered in the clutch with a walk-off double down the left field line, and Mosqueda sprinted all the way around to score the only run.
- Mayer was the first base runner with a four-pitch walk with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Continentals threatened with two runners aboard after Lydia Mirabito '26 reached on a dropped third strike, but the Cardinals worked out of the jam as the next batter tapped one back to the pitcher for the third out.
- Wesleyan put pressure on in the top of the fifth with back-to-back infield singles—its first base runners of the afternoon—but the Continentals forced out a runner at third base on a fielder's choice and Tansky struck out the next batter.
- The Cardinals mounted another threat in the top of the sixth with a leadoff walk and advanced the runner into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Tansky rose to the occasion once again, notching her fifth strikeout and fielding a comebacker that ended the inning.
- Hamilton left a total of five runners stranded across the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Both teams went down in order in the seventh, and the game went into extra innings.
- Wesleyan sparked some hope with a leadoff triple in the top of the eighth, but the Continentals quickly shut the door. After a pop-up to second for the first out, the Cardinals tried to score on a ground ball back to Tansky. She calmly checked the runner, fired to third base, and Hamilton executed a textbook rundown at the plate.
