Softball wins Game 1 with SUNY Oneonta in walk-off fashion, 6-5

Mosqueda ’28 went 3-for-3 at the plate in Game 2 for the Continentals

CLINTON, N.Y. – Hamilton College's Yael Everett '28 picked up the win in the circle and drove in the winning run in the opener, and the Continentals split a non-conference doubleheader with the SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons at Hamilton's Loop Road Athletic Complex on Tuesday, April 22.

Season Update

  • Hamilton (14-8 overall) has walked off its last two wins.
  • The Red Dragons (15-13), who are 8-2 in the State University of New York Athletic Conference, have won seven of their last eight games.

Game 1 (Hamilton wins, 6-5)

How It Happened

  • The Red Dragons struck first with three runs in the top of the first, but the Continentals answered with three in the bottom half. Everett and Lydia Mirabito '26 set the table with back-to-back walks, and Sofia Santana '26 reached on a throwing error that brought both runners home. Charlie Quinn '25 capped the inning with a single to right that scored Santana and knotted the score at 3–3.
  • Hamilton pulled ahead 4–3 in the third inning. Alexis Mayer '26 opened the frame with a single up the middle, advanced to second on a groundout, and came around to score on back-to-back wild pitches.
  • Oneonta found the tying run in the top of the fourth inning and regained the lead at 5-4 in the top of the sixth.
  • After setting the Red Dragons down in order in the top of the seventh, Hamilton made the most of its final trip to the plate as the Continentals scored two runs on two hits and a pair of costly errors.
  • Emma Tansky '25 sparked the rally with an infield single to short and advanced to second on an overthrow. Alison Zorn '26 followed with a clutch RBI single through the left side that brought in Tansky, and then gave way to pinch-runner Jordan Merklin '26. Ella Heftved '25 drew a walk and Miranda Mosqueda '28 reached on a misplayed ball in center field that loaded the bases. With one out, Everett hit a grounder to short and the Red Dragons threw home for the force, but Merklin had too much speed and she slid in safely for the winning run.

Notes

  • Quinn drove in her 14th run of the season.
  • Mirabito reached base three times on a single and two walks.
  • Everett (2-2) tossed three solid innings of relief as she allowed just one run on two hits. She also played the hero at the plate as she drove in the game-winning run on her 16th hit of the season.
  • Ava Thys led Oneonta at the plate with three hits while Jaime Cardello had two. Emily Brown drove in two runs.

Game 2 (Oneonta wins, 7-6)

How It Happened

  • Oneonta jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and were up 7-1 through two..
  • Hamilton responded in the bottom of the first on a one-out walk by Mosqueda, a double to right-center field by Mirabito, and a sacrifice fly by Mayer.
  • The Continentals began to close the gap in the fourth with a run on a one-out double to right by Nikki Dyche '28, followed with a clutch RBI single by Zorn to the gap in left-center field.
  • Hamilton steadily trimmed its deficit with two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth.
  • In the fifth Santana laid down a perfect bunt and advanced to third on Mosqueda's double down the left field line. Both runners scored on Mirabito's double to right.
  • In the sixth Zorn singled to left center, Rogers walked and Santana brought in a run with another hit to the left-center field gap. Mosqueda drove in Rogers with a two-out single that made it 7-6.
  • The Continentals tried to mount a comeback in the seventh inning when Mayer led off with a walk, but the Red Dragons retired the next three batters in order and ended the threat.

Notes

  • Zorn posted a season-high three hits.
  • Mirabito drove in two runs with a pair of doubles.
  • Santana recorded her fifth multi-hit game of the season with two singles.
  • Dyche added her third double of the season.
  • Tansky, who came in with the team trailing 7-1, gave up just two hits and one walk with three strikeouts over six scoreless innings.
  • Cardello paced Oneonta with three hits while Thys added two.
  • Julia Serena and Sophia Mangone drove in two runs apiece for the Red Dragons.
