Softball splits NESCAC doubleheader at Amherst, Mayer ’26 homers again

Head Coach Stephanie Hartquist recorded her 100th career win with the Continentals

AMHERST, Mass. – Hamilton College's Alexis Mayer '26 drove in a total of six runs, and Yael Everett '28 tossed a shutout in Game 2 as the Continentals split a NESCAC doubleheader with the Amherst College Mammoths on Sunday afternoon, April 27.

Season Update

  • Hamilton (15-11, 6-8 NESCAC) snapped its losing skid at four games. The Continentals shut out the Mammoths 8-0 in five innings in Game 2.
  • The Mammoths (17-16, 7-9) trailed 9-1 going into the bottom of the fifth in Game 1 before they mounted a comeback and edged Hamilton, 10-9.

Game 1 (Amherst wins, 10-9)

How It Happened

  • The Mammoths cut their deficit to 9-7 with two runs in the sixth inning. In the seventh they scored three runs, including the game-winner on an error.
  • The Continentals came out swinging and put up five runs in the top of the first. Emma Tansky '25 set the tone with an infield single and Everett followed with a double to the gap in left-center field that put two runners in scoring position. Miranda Mosqueda '28 kept the momentum going with a shot down the left field line for a single that advanced both runners. Everett came home on a groundout and Gaby Guerra '27 drove in Mosqueda with a single. Guerra scored on a double to left center by Charlie Quinn '25. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Quinn crossed the plate on a two-out single through the left side by Alison Zorn '26 for a 5-0 lead.
  • The Mammoths answered with a run in the bottom of the first, but Hamilton responded with two more in the second. Tansky sparked the inning with a perfectly placed leadoff bunt towards third base and with two outs, Mayer crushed a two-run homer over the left field wall and extended the Continentals' lead to 7-1.
  • Hamilton tacked on single runs in the fourth and fifth innings and made it 9-1.
  • The Continentals were three outs away from ending the game in the bottom of the fifth due to the eight-run mercy rule, but Amherst had other plans. The Mammoths surged with four runs fueled by four hits, including a double and a bases-clearing triple, and pulled within 9-5.

Notes

  • The Continentals tallied 15 hits while the Mammoths posted 10.
  • Tansky tied a career high with four hits, scored two runs and swiped her 15th base of the season.
  • Mosqueda added her third double of the season and finished with two hits.
  • Guerra finished with two RBI and two hits.
  • Mayer drove in a team-best three runs and blasted her fifth homer of the season.
  • Quinn and Everett hit doubles as Quinn also ended up with two hits.
  • Zorn recorded her 18th hit of the season.
  • Lydia Mirabito '26 singled twice for her sixth multi-hit game this season.
  • Amherst's Dani Torres Werra batted in a team-high four runs on two hits.
  • Abby Moravek plated two runs on two hits, while America Rangel also had a pair of hits.
  • Abby Rebhan (3-6) allowed two runs on six hits and one walk while striking out two batters in 5.1 innings of relief. Rebhan also drove in a run and doubled.

Game 2 (Hamilton wins, 8-0)

How It Happened

  • After a scoreless first inning, the Continentals took control with a four-run rally in the second. Mirabito led off with a walk, advanced to second on a single by Quinn, and scored on an infield single by Sofia Santana '26. Everett kept the momentum going with a run-scoring single up the middle, and Mayer capped the inning with a two-out, two-run single to left field.
  • Hamilton extended its lead to 7-0 with three runs in the top of the fourth. Santana reached on a fielding error, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, and Mosqueda reached on a fielder's choice that put runners on the corners. Mayer delivered a clutch one-run single through the left side and later crossed the plate with the third run of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Jordan Merklin '26.
  • The Continentals retired the Mammoths in order in the bottom of the fourth and added another run in the fifth that pushed their lead to 8-0.
  • Amherst loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning, but Everett closed it out with back-to-back strikeouts and secured the eight-run mercy rule victory.

  • Head Coach Stephanie Hartquist reached her milestone 100th coaching victory.
  • Mayer plated a team-high three runs on two hits. She leads the team with 28 on the season.
