Baseball falls to Amherst in NESCAC West play after three-hour rain delay

Teams wrap up their three-game weekend series on Sunday, April 27 at noon

CLINTON, N.Y. – Amherst College scored nine runs in the top of the first inning and the Mammoths went on to a 27-1 NESCAC West Division win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Hamilton's breezy and damp Loop Road Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon, April 26.

Season Update

  • The Continentals (14-16, 2-9 NESCAC West) need a win and two losses by Wesleyan University on Sunday in order to make the postseason.
  • Amherst (16-14, 8-3) scored 20 or more runs for the second time in its last six games.

How It Happened

  • The Mammoths led 9-0 after the first, 11-0 after two and 21-0 through three.
  • Hamilton avoided the shutout with a run in the sixth. Sam Humphries '28 was hit by a pitch leading off the inning and Dillon Schmidt '28 singled to right-center field. Henry Boehm '25 drew a walk that loaded the bases, and Andrew Millington '28 forced in Humphries with another free pass.

Notes

  • The game, which ended after seven innings, was supposed to be the first in a doubleheader with the second scheduled for nine innings. A three-hour, 10-minute rain delay forced the third contest of the series to be moved to Sunday.
  • Four players singled for the Continentals.
  • Greg Kopp '25 is in fourth place on the program's all-time list with 129 career hits.
  • Boehm went 1-for-2 with a walk. He's hitting .383 (23-for-60) with on-base percentage of .500.
  • Quinn Perkins '25 picked up his first hit since March 25.
  • Schmidt recorded his third hit.
  • Millington registered his first RBI at Hamilton.
  • Mantas Kempinas '28 pitched a perfect seventh inning for the Continentals. Kempinas has pitched one inning twice and hasn't allowed a run in either appearance.
  • Amherst's E.J. Nevills (4-1) allowed three hits in five shutout innings.
  • Ryan McIntyre had three hits, including a triple, drove in four runs and scored four. J.J. Grimes chipped in three hits, including a double, and plated three runs. Charlie LaFreniere and Justin Orridge went 2-for-2 with two walks, four RBI and three runs scored apiece. Gabriel Ciechanover hit a home run in his first collegiate at-bat and Nick Addison added a solo homer.
