Baseball splits two non-conference games in slugfest at Rochester

DiCerbo '27 hit a grand slam in Game 2 and finished the doubleheader with seven RBI

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Hamilton College's Gianni DiCerbo '27 went 3-for-3 and drove in a career-high five runs in Game 2 as the Continentals salvaged a split of their non-conference doubleheader against the University of Rochester Yellowjackets at Rochester's Towers Field on Tuesday, April 22.
 

Season Update

  • Hamilton (14-14 overall) won for the fourth time in its last five games.
  • The Yellowjackets (14-13) have lost three of their last four.
 

Game 2 (Hamilton wins, 16-11)

 

How It Happened

  • DiCerbo gave the Continentals a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning with an RBI ground-rule double to center field, and put them in the lead to stay at 5-1 with a grand slam over the fence in left-center field in the second.
  • Rochester pulled within 6-4 with three runs in the third.
  • Hamilton blew the game wide open with a 10-run fourth inning as the Continentals scored eight runs before an out was made. Greg Kopp '25, Chester Boynton '27 and Lucas Herman '26 had two-run singles. Herman drove in three runs in the inning.
 

Notes

  • Colin McMahon '28 (2-1) started on the mound for Hamilton and allowed four runs in 2.2 innings pitched.
  • The top three spots in the Continentals' lineup accounted for eight of their 10 hits.
  • DiCerbo extended his hit streak to nine games. He's batting .408 (31-for-76) with a 1.169 OPS. DiCerbo is fourth in the NESCAC in batting average and slugging percentage (.658) and third in on-base percentage (.511).
  • Boynton was 3-for-3 with a walk and tied a career high with four runs scored. He's second in the conference with a .424 batting average (39-for-92) and first in on-base percentage (.533). Boynton smacked his second triple this spring.
  • Herman finished with two singles and a career-best three RBI.
  • Kopp went 2-for-3 with a walk and drove in a season-high three runs. He leads the team with 24 RBI. Kopp is tied for fourth on the team's all-time list with 124 career hits.
  • Hamilton hitters drew 11 walks and were hit by a pitch three times.
  • Benjamin Garber drove in four runs for the Yellowjackets.
 

Game 1 (Rochester wins, 11-8)

 

How It Happened

  • Rochester led 4-0 after two innings, 6-1 through three and stayed in front from the second inning on.
  • Kopp drove in the Continentals' first run with a double down the right field line in the third.
  • Boynton and DiCerbo plated runs with infield singles in the fourth as Hamilton trimmed its deficit to 6-4.
  • The Continentals trailed 9-4 in the fifth when they tried to rally again. Jeremy Diaz '27 cleared the bases with a double to left-center field, and Alfonso Rada '27 plated Diaz with a single to left that made it 9-8.
  • Jackson Reed provided some cushion for the Yellowjackets with a two-run homer with two outs in the bottom half of the inning.
 

Notes

  • Diaz recorded his first career multi-hit game and drove in a career-best three runs. The double was his second this season.
  • DiCerbo contributed two singles and two RBI.
  • Boynton went 2-for-3 with a walk.
  • Kopp hit his sixth double this year. He's fifth on the team's all-time list with 86 career RBI.
  • Michael Tallarida '26 singled and scored two runs. He has 10 runs in the last five games.
  • Ethan Righter '27 also singled and scored twice.
  • Mark Kovach '28 (1-2) started on the mound and struck out five in three innings, but allowed six runs.
  • Reed added a triple and drove in four runs for Rochester.
 

Next Game

Hamilton hosts Amherst College (14-14, 6-3) for a NESCAC West Division game on Friday, April 25 at 4 p.m.
