Baseball comes back from early deficit, routs SUNY Cobleskill 20-7

Tallarida '26, Friedrich '28 and Boynton '27 smashed home runs for the Continentals

CLINTON, N.Y. – Hamilton College blasted three home runs and the Continentals posted a 20-7 non-conference win against the SUNY Cobleskill Fighting Tigers at Hamilton's Loop Road Athletic Complex on a breezy and mild Friday, April 18.

Season Update

  • The Continentals (11-13 overall) won at home for the first time in five tries this season.
  • Cobleskill (7-16) dropped its third straight game.

How It Happened

  • Things did not start out well for Hamilton as the Fighting Tigers led 5-1 in the third inning and 6-2 in the fourth.
  • The Continentals' Michael Tallarida '26 made it 6-4 with a towering, two-run homer that easily cleared the fence in left-center field in the bottom of the fourth inning.
  • Hamilton went in front to stay with a six-run fifth inning. A ground ball to the second baseman by Sam Humphries '28 scored Tallarida with the go-ahead run. Gianni DiCerbo '27 gave the Continentals a 10-6 advantage on a bases-loaded triple with two outs. DiCerbo's deep fly ball landed near the base of the fence in center field. It looked like the outfielder would have a play on it, but they stumbled and fell over at the last moment.
  • Hamilton plated five more runs with two outs in the sixth. Louis Friedrich '28 hit a three-run blast that cleared the fence to the right of the scoreboard in left field. Humphries singled to left and Chester Boynton '27 followed with a two-run round-tripper that took roughly the same path Friedrich's home run did.
  • The Continentals clinched the win with another five-spot in the seventh inning as they took advantage of three hits, three walks and a dropped fly ball by the center fielder.

Notes

  • The 20 runs and 18 hits were season highs for Hamilton.
  • The Continentals have won all four meetings with Cobleskill.
  • Friedrich went 2-for-3 with a walk, his first collegiate home run and his first multi-hit game. The four RBI and three runs scored were season-best totals.
  • Boynton went 2-for-3 with two walks and his first career homer. He's second in the NESCAC with a .403 batting average and .520 on-base percentage, tied for second with 21 walks, and tied for eighth with 31 hits.
  • Tallarida also walked twice and scored three runs. He leads the team with four home runs this season and is the all-time leader with 17.
  • DiCerbo went 3-for-4 with a triple and a career-high three runs batted in. His three hits tied a career best and he leads the team with four triples.
  • Henry Boehm '25 went 2-for-2 with a triple and three walks. Boehm scored four runs, which tied Hamilton's season high. He's batting .396 (19-for-48) this season.

  • Ethan Righter '27 singled twice and scored three runs.
  • Humphries singled twice and walked twice. The two hits, two runs and two RBI were all season highs.
