Women’s lacrosse comeback comes up short in 11-8 setback at Williams

Continentals outscored the Ephs 4-2 in the final quarter

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Williams College limited the Hamilton College Continentals to two goals through the first 40 minutes and the Ephs held on for an 11-8 NESCAC win under the lights on Williams' Farley-Lamb Field on Wednesday evening, April 9. 
 

Season Update

  • Hamilton (3-7, 1-7 NESCAC) dropped its third straight -- all against ranked opponents. 
  • Nationally ranked No. 23 Williams (6-5, 3-4) had lost its previous two games.  

How It Happened

  • Hamilton struck first less than two minutes into the opening quarter. Grace Martucci '28 caused a turnover, the Continentals completed a successful clear, and Eugenia Kaltsas '26 scored the goal.
  • The Ephs responded with three unanswered goals for a 3-1 lead with just under two minutes left in the first.
  • The Continentals capitalized on a woman-up opportunity late in the quarter. Alex Orlando '25 scored off a feed from Aine Cleary '25 and brought Hamilton within one at 3-2 with 22 seconds remaining.
  • Williams scored all three goals in the second quarter and extended its lead to 6-2 by halftime.
  • The Ephs made it five straight goals in the third quarter and built an 8-2 advantage with 4:48 to go.
  • Hamilton responded 40 seconds later after Julia Lee '27 secured a draw control and the team completed a clear. Marin Ciardiello '26 found Orlando, who scored her second goal and made it 8-3.
  • The Continentals added another just over two minutes later as Avery Trach '27 converted on a free-position attempt and closed the gap to 8-4 with 1:21 left.
  • Williams regained control with a woman-up goal in the final minute of the quarter and pushed the lead to 9-4 heading into the fourth.
  • Hamilton scored back-to-back goals in less than two minutes in the fourth. Maddigan Leifer '26 struck on a free-position shot, and Sarah Creamer '26 cut the deficit to 9-6 with 8:44 remaining.
  • The Ephs answered quickly with two goals and reestablished a five-goal lead at 11-6 with just under eight minutes to go.
  • Hamilton closed out the game with two final goals—Cleary scoring off an assist from Leifer, and Kaltsas converting on a free-position shot. 

Notes

  • Kaltsas recorded her first career multi-goal game.
  • Orlando (two goals) leads the Continentals with 17. 
  • Trach scored her third goal of the season. 
  • Leifer (goal, assist) is second on the team with six assists. 
  • Creamer buried her sixth goal of the season. 
  • Cleary has 18 points this season after her 12th goal and sixth helper. 
  • Ciardiello passed out her third assist of the season.
  • Clara Paolucci '28 made nine saves for the Continentals. 
  • Claudia Russell led Williams with four points on two goals and two assists.
  • Ainsley Abel and Katy McCullough added two goals apiece.
  • Juliet Kilborn registered a goal, two assists and eight draw controls.
  • Grace Collier contributed a goal, four ground balls, four draw controls and three caused turnovers.
  • Caroline Pratt finished with nine saves.

Next Game

The Continentals host No. 7 Wesleyan (8-4, 3-4) for another NESCAC matchup on Saturday, April 12 at noon at Steuben Field. Hamilton will honor its nine seniors before the game.
