Men’s lacrosse clipped by No. 12 Amherst, 9-8

Heher ‘25, Pearl ’25 and Coyle ’26 scored two goals each for the Continentals

CLINTON, N.Y. – Amherst College's Bennett Chow netted the game-winning goal with 12:04 left in the fourth quarter and the Mammoths battled for a 9-8 NESCAC win over the Hamilton College Continentals at Hamilton's sunny but windy Steuben Field on Saturday afternoon, March 8. 
 

Season Update

  • Hamilton (1-2, 0-2 NESCAC) has scored 16 goals in two conference games and 19 in its one non-conference contest. 
  • Amherst (2-0, 2-0) is ranked 12th in the USILA Division III Top 20 poll.

How It Happened

  • Chow put the Mammoths ahead for good at 9-8 with 12:04 left in the final quarter. 
  • Carson Kraus '28 had a great opportunity with 6:48 left, but his shot rang off the post.
  • Troy Pollock '25 registered two attempts, but both were denied by Amherst's Brooks Catlin.
  • Jake Mair '25 forced a turnover with 12 seconds left and after a successful clear, Will Heher '25 was pressured into a hurried shot that was blocked by a defender just as time expired.
  • The Mammoths took advantage of an early man-up opportunity and scored the opening goal 36 seconds into the first quarter. 
  • Heher put Hamilton on the scoreboard 2:20 later, following a ground ball pickup by Wyatt Estepp '27.
  • Amherst scored the next two goals for a 3-1 lead with 40 seconds left in the opening quarter. 
  • With six seconds remaining, Frank Coyle '26 scored his first goal of the game after a pass from Estepp and cut the Continentals' deficit.
  • The Continentals came out strong in the second quarter, scoring three straight goals in the first 5:48 for a 5-3 lead with 9:12 remaining.
  • Following two timeouts, Amherst answered with back-to-back goals and tied the score at 5-5 with 4:42 remaining.
  • Heher gave the Continentals a 6-5 lead at the break, scoring a man-up goal off a pass from Coyle with 1:23 remaining.
  • The Mammoths struck just 44 seconds into the third quarter, but the Continentals responded and regained the lead on a goal by Jesse Delinsky '26 at the 9:53 mark.
  • Amherst responded with two goals in 31 seconds and seized an 8-7 lead with 5:54 remaining.
  • Wylie Ocken '27 forced a turnover, corralled the ground ball, and sparked a successful clear for Hamilton. After setting up the offense, Justin Pearl '25 delivered the equalizer with 1:37 remaining in the third. 

Notes

  • Coyle paced the Hamilton offense with three points on two goals and an assist. He leads the Continentals with 12 points through three contests. 
  • Heher netted his second straight multi-goal game with two goals. 
  • Pearl recorded his 66th and 67th career goals.  
  • Kraus scored his third goal of the season. 
  • Delinsky has scored a goal in all three games. 
  • Little passed out his second helper of the season and scooped up two ground balls. 
  • Estepp ended up with two assists and leads the team with five.
  • Jayme Wilde '25 had a team-best four caused turnovers and three ground balls. 
  • Jack Fried '25 made 12 saves for the Continentals. 
  • Chow led everyone with three goals and passed out an assist.
  • Alex Vlacich added two goals and an assist.  
  • Ben Wick chipped in two goals. 
  • Brendan Reilly passed out an assist and scooped up three ground balls. 
  • Willie Doyle finished with one helper. 
  • Matthew Sheinberg and Alex Giacobbe finished with one goal and four ground balls each. 
  • Thompson Lau collected a game-high six ground balls, while Ben Bruno and Sam Gerber had four apiece. 
  • Catlin stopped seven shots in goal for the Mammoths. 
  • Nicholas Kopp won 15-of-20 faceoffs. 
  • Amherst scored on one of its two extra-man opportunities while Hamilton capitalized on its lone man-up opportunity.  

Next Game

The Continentals face Tufts University (2-0, 2-0 NESCAC) in Stevenson University's Mustang Classic on Friday, March 14 at 4 p.m.
