CLINTON, N.Y. – Hamilton College's
Frank Coyle '26 scored four goals and added two assists as the Continentals cruised to a 19-5 non-conference win against the Utica University Pioneers at Hamilton's Withiam Field on Tuesday, March 4.
Season Update
- The Continentals (1-1 overall) rebounded from their 14-8 NESCAC setback at Bates College on March 1.
- Utica (0-2) has been outscored 37-8 in its two losses.
How It Happened
- Hamilton showed signs of what was to come just 10 seconds into the first quarter when Sean Gebauer '25 won the opening faceoff, scooped up the ground ball and passed ahead to long-stick midfielder Jayme Wilde '25. Wilde ran about 10 yards straight towards the goal and unleashed a shot that ended up in the back of the net.
- Thomas Healy '26 made it 2-0 with 13:32 left in the first. Coyle had both of his assists on goals in the opening quarter, and the Continentals led 6-0 after 15 minutes.
- Hamilton scored three goals in a span of 51 seconds late in the second quarter and enjoyed a 9-1 advantage with 3:22 remaining. Lucas Donahue found the back of the net for the Pioneers with 1.4 seconds to go, but they still trailed 9-2 at the half.
- The Continentals put the game away by scoring five goals in the third quarter and keeping Utica off the board during those 15 minutes. Coyle and Will Heher '25 notched two goals apiece, and Hamilton enjoyed a 12-goal cushion at 14-2 with 15 minutes left.
- Goals by the Continentals' David Petz '26 and Jack Calichman '28 just 39 seconds apart late in the fourth quarter rounded out the scoring.
Notes
- Coyle tied a career high with the four goals and established a career best with six points.
- Healy finished with three goals. His goal late in the first quarter was the 100th career point for the attackman. Healy also collected six ground balls.
- Maddux Little '27 entered the day with four career points, but registered two goals and an assist against the Pioneers.
- Wyatt Estepp '27 picked up a career-high three helpers.
- A dozen Hamilton players scored at least one goal.
- Calichman and Griffen Bell '28 tallied their first collegiate goals, while Jake Goldstein '28 had an assist for his first collegiate point.
- Gebauer and Reece Hickey '26 won 8-of-9 faceoffs apiece.
- Wilde, Hickey and Andrew Higgins '28 scooped up five ground balls each.
- Ben Keppler '26 started in goal for the Continentals and made three saves in 34-plus minutes.
- Jack Williams '28 stopped one shot in 17-plus minutes in his collegiate debut, and Ben Greco '27 played the last 8:19 of the fourth quarter.
- Donahue and Noah Erickson scored two goals apiece for the Pioneers. Michael Mecca contributed three ground balls and two caused turnovers, and Patrick Oswald turned away 18 shots.
- Hamilton dominated the action as it boasted a 55-17 shot advantage, had 59 ground balls to Utica's 17, and won 22-of-27 faceoffs.
- The game marked the 25th playing of the Contineer Cup. The Continentals have won 24 of the 25 all-time meetings with the Pioneers.
