Baseball drops opener, Righter ’27 and DiCerbo ’27 hit first homers

Kaufman ’26 ripped two doubles for the Continentals

DAVENPORT, Fla. – University of Saint Joseph broke a 5-5 tie with three runs in the fourth inning and the Blue Jays posted a 14-9 non-conference win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Northeast Regional Park on Saturday, March 15. 
 

Season Update

  • Hamilton was playing its 2025 season opener. 
  • Saint Joseph (7-5 overall) is a member of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference. 

How It Happened

  • The Blue Jays jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning on four hits. 
  • Hamilton cut its deficit with three runs on two hits and two errors in the bottom half. Michael Tallarida '26 roped a one-out double to right-center that put him in scoring position. Greg Kopp '25 drew a walk and both runners advanced on a failed pickoff attempt. Ethan Righter '27 plated all three runs on a shot over the right field fence. 
  • Saint Joseph pushed its lead to 5-3 on one hit in the second frame, but the Continentals knotted the score in their next at-bat on a hit and an error. Chester Boynton '27 singled to left, stole second and advanced to third after Taylor Kaufman '26 reached on a fielding error. Hamilton completed a successful double steal that scored Boynton and advanced Kaufman into scoring position. The Continentals continued to be aggressive as Kaufman stole third and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by Kopp. 
  • The Blue Jays gained control in the fourth by scoring three runs on three hits. 
  • Hamilton scored a run in the bottom of the fifth and added another in the sixth. Gianni DiCerbo '27 hit a solo homer to right field in the bottom of the seventh and brought the Continentals within one at 9-8.
  • Both teams scored in the eighth inning and the Blue Jays pulled away in the final frame with four runs on four hits. The inning was highlighted by Ryan Shaw's two-run homer. 

Notes

  • Righter recorded his first career homer and knocked in a team-best four runs. 
  • Kaufman finished with two doubles, a walk and two stolen bases and scored twice. 
  • Tallarida tallied his 10th career double. 
  • Boynton had three runs and two hits, including his third career double. He drew two walks and had two stolen bases. 
  • DiCerbo's homer was the first of his career. He also singled.
  • Kopp and Lucas Herman '26 plated one run apiece and walked twice.
  • Kyle Egidio '27 struck out two in one inning and Henry Tyler '25 pitched a perfect fifth. 
  • Jack Kane and Chase Belisle led Saint Joseph with three hits apiece. 
  • Shaw drove in a team-best four runs for the Blue Jays. 
  • Marcus Tarfano allowed two runs on four hits with no walks in four innings and picked up the win.  

Next Game

The Continentals are back in action on Sunday, March 16 with a non-conference twinbill against Springfield College starting at noon.
