AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Hamilton College's
Taylor Kaufman '26 hammered three extra-base hits and drove in five runs in the Continentals' non-conference doubleheader sweep of the Springfield College Pride at Lake Myrtle Park on Sunday afternoon, March 16.
Season Update
- Hamilton (2-1 overall) rebounded from its season-opening loss against the University of Saint Joseph on March 15.
- Springfield (2-6), which is a member of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference, has lost all three of its games in Florida.
Game 1 (Hamilton wins 8-1 in eight innings)
How It Happened
- The teams were tied 1-1 after seven innings, so they went to extras.
- The Continentals had the first crack at it in the top of the eighth. A runner was placed on second base and Carter Chambers '25 was hit by a pitch. A new pitcher was brought in and Kaufman greeted them with a three-run blast over the fence in right field for a 4-1 lead.
- Michael Tallarida '26 made it back-to-back jacks with his solo home run to center field. Ethan Righter '27 drew a one-out walk, Gianni DiCerbo '27 was hit by a pitch, and Alfonso Rada '27 plated both of them with a double down the left field line. Lucas Herman '26 drove in Rada with a two-out double to left for the seventh run of the inning.
- Hamilton relief pitcher Henry Tyler '25 gave up a walk but nothing more in the bottom of the inning.
- Kaufman gave the Continentals a 1-0 lead in the first inning without the benefit of a hit. He led off with a walk, went to second a wild pitch, stole third base and scored with two outs on another wild pitch.
- Michael Lepere led off the bottom of the third with a home run to right and drew the Pride even. Springfield had runners on second and third with two outs in the fourth, but the next batter struck out and ended the inning.
Notes
- Kaufman finished 2-for-3 with a walk and the three runs batted in.
- Tallarida hit his program-record 14th career home run and drew two walks.
- Rada went 2-for-4 with the two RBI.
- Chester Boynton '27 doubled.
- In his first career start on the mound, Aden Soroca '27 allowed one run and scattered six hits in six innings. Soroca struck out seven and walked four.
- Tyler (1-0) recorded his second career win with two scoreless innings of relief. He struck out one and walked one.
Game 2 (Hamilton wins 6-5)
How It Happened
- Hamilton led 3-0 after one inning and 5-0 after two. Kaufman was hit by a pitch leading off the bottom of the first and stole second base. After the next two batters struck out, Herman doubled down the right field line and drove in Kaufman. DiCerbo made it 2-0 with a triple to right center that scored Herman, and DiCerbo trotted home on Rada's double to left.
- In the second, Chambers led off with a double to left center and Quinn Perkins '25 walked. Kaufman drove them both in with a triple down the line in right.
- The Pride rallied and tied the score with three runs in the third inning and two in the fourth.
- The Continentals scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fourth, and once again Kaufman was in the middle of it. After the first batter struck out, Kaufman doubled down the left field line and Tallarida walked. Greg Kopp '25 bounced a single through the right side of the infield and Kaufman sped around to score.
- Springfield's offense generated one walk and no hits over the last three innings.
Notes
- Kaufman is hitting .545 with an on-base percentage of .643 and a 1.273 slugging percentage through the first three games. Five of his six hits have gone for extra bases and he has stolen four bases. He has drove in six runs and scored six.
- Kopp collected his 100th career hit at Hamilton.
- Righter (1-0) pitched an impressive 3.1 innings of scoreless relief. He fanned six, walked one and allowed two hits. The win was the second of his career.
