Late surge pushes men's basketball past Conn. College, Morgan '25 pours in 27

Continentals shot 50 percent from beyond the arc and extended their win streak to five

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Hamilton College's Hank Morgan '25 led all players with 27 points and the Continentals exploded in the final minutes of the second half in their 69-57 NESCAC win against the Connecticut College Camels inside Conn. College's Luce Field House on Friday, Feb. 7.
 

Season Update

  • Hamilton (17-4, 5-2 NESCAC), which is receiving votes in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25 poll, won its fifth straight game. Four of those five games have been on the road.
  • The Camels (11-11, 3-5) dropped their fourth straight contest.
 

How It Happened

  • A three-pointer by Morgan with 17:18 left in the second half broke a 35-35 tie and put the Continentals in the lead for good. Morgan's basket also started an 8-2 run that gave Hamilton a 43-37 lead with 14:54 remaining. A layup by Owen Kane '25 and a three-pointer by Connor Jenkins '27 completed the spurt.
  • Conn. College refused to concede, making a three-pointer and a layup that brought the Camels within one at 46-45 with 11:40 left.
  • Conn. College still trailed by one point at 52-51 after two free throws by Cam Schainfeld with 6:34 to go.
  • Hamilton secured the win by surging for a 15-3 run during the next five minutes. Jenkins highlighted the run with a three-pointer and Morgan capped it with back-to-back three-point plays for a 67-54 advantage with 1:41 left.
  • Kane made two free throws with 1:10 left for a 14-point Continentals' lead at 69-55, their largest of the night.
  • Jalen Reese '27 opened the scoring for Hamilton as the Continentals started the game with a 13-5 run. Reese's jumper was followed by a layup by Kane, a jumper by Teja Singh '25, two free throws and a jumper by Reese, and capped with a three-pointer by Morgan with 14:40 remaining in the first half.
  • A three-pointer by Singh put the Continentals ahead 21-12 with 11:07 left, their largest lead of the first half.
  • The Camels responded with an 11-3 run that pulled them within one point at 24-23 with 5:51 to go.
  • After four-and-a-half minutes without a field goal, Singh ended Hamilton's drought with a layup and gave the Continentals a 26-23 edge with 4:42 left.
  • Hamilton's lead fluctuated between one and five points the rest of the half. Morgan completed a four-point play with 2:38 left when he drained a three-pointer, was fouled and made the free throw.
  • Graham Robinson '25 capped the first half with a layup that gave the Continentals a four-point lead at 32-28.
  • Hamilton made it 35-30 early in the second half after a free throw by Kane and a jumper by Singh.
 

Notes

  • Morgan leads the NESCAC with 22.0 points per game. He also handed out four assists.
  • Jenkins contributed 11 points in a season-high 24 minutes off the bench. He made three three-pointers.
  • Reese tied a season-high with 10 points, grabbed a team-high six rebounds and dished out four assists.
  • Singh chipped in nine points and a team-best five assists.
  • Kane and Robinson registered two blocked shots apiece.
  • Schainfeld paced Conn. College with 16 points and Dylan Watson registered 13.
  • Edward Harrison dropped in 12 points off the bench.
  • Andrew Hartel contributed eight points and a game-high seven rebounds.
  • The Continentals finished at 55.3 percent (26-47) from the field, including 9-of-18 from beyond the arc, and went 8-for-12 at the charity stripe.
  • The Camels shot 40.8 percent (20-49) from the floor, including 6-of-18 from long range, and went 11-for-17 (64.7 percent) at the line.
  • Morgan scored 17 of his points in the second half when Hamilton shot nearly 61 percent from the field.
  • The Continentals have won three of the last four meetings with Conn. College.
 

Next Game

Hamilton puts its 12-0 record in true road games on the line at Medford, Mass., for a NESCAC contest at nationally ranked No. 15 Tufts University (18-4, 6-2) on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 3 p.m.
