No. 6 men's hockey plays to a scoreless tie at Middlebury, wins shootout

Reid '27 turned away 19 shots, including six in overtime, for his first career shutout

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — Hamilton College leaned on steady defending and another composed outing from goaltender Aksel Reid '27 in the Continentals' hard-fought 0-0 tie with the Middlebury College Panthers in a NESCAC matchup on Saturday afternoon, Dec. 6, inside Middlebury's Chip Kenyon Arena.

Season Update

  • Nationally ranked No. 6 Hamilton (7-0-1, 4-0-1 NESCAC) went to overtime for the second time in as many days. The Continentals edged Williams College 4-3 on Dec. 5.
  • The Panthers (4-2-2, 3-2-1) are unbeaten in their last six games at 4-0-2.

How It Happened

  • Although the contest was recorded as a tie, Hamilton prevailed 3-2 in a six-round shootout and picked up two points in the conference standings. Ryan Sordillo '27 delivered the decisive goal in the sixth round and Reid denied Middlebury's final four attempts.
  • Hamilton generated early momentum and finished the first period with a 14-7 shot advantage, but Panthers goaltender Andrew Heinze was sharp from the opening faceoff.
  • The Continentals nearly struck in the opening six minutes as Liam Varmecky '28 and Luke Tchor '27 each rang iron early.
  • Power plays didn't offer either team the upper hand, as Hamilton went 0-for-5 and Middlebury 0-for-4.
  • Hamilton sustained pressure in the second period with Vincent Gould '27 getting denied from point-blank range and two more bids clanging off the pipe.
  • The third period featured end-to-end urgency. Reid turned away a Reece Brednich break-in about three minutes in and tracked several looks from the point. Connor Thue '29 fired a final shot from the left circle, but Heinze deftly deflected it.
  • In overtime, Hamilton earned a penalty for tripping with 3:11 left. The Panthers pulled Heinze for an extra skater as the delayed call went on for more than a minute. Reid made key stops on chances by Jack Silverman and Jackson Morehouse late in the power play as the game drifted toward the shootout. Reid turned away six shots in overtime, and Middlebury racked up 12 total shots in the five minutes.
  • The shootout swung early in the Panthers' favor as Bobby May's shot found the net after the first attempt by Noah Leibl '27 was unsuccessful. Tchor answered for the Continentals, Caden Morgan put Middlebury back ahead, and Devon de Vries '27 leveled the round.

Notes

  • Hamilton finished with a 31-19 advantage in shots on goal and blocked 17 more attempts by the Panthers.
  • Tchor led in shots on goal with eight.
  • Reid posted his first career shutout with 19 saves and owns a 1.48 goals against average and .933 save percentage with 125 saves in six starts.
  • Heinze stopped all 31 Hamilton shots and surpassed 1,000 career saves.
  • Middlebury defenseman Christian Wood recorded a career-best six blocked shots.
  • The Continentals are 5-1-2 in their last eight meetings with the Panthers, including a 3-2 win in double overtime in the 2025 NESCAC championship semifinals.
