Rochester outlasts women’s basketball, 70-64

Harris ’27 posted her second consecutive 20-point game

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The University of Rochester turned a three-point deficit into a six-point lead by scoring nine in a row late in the fourth quarter and the Yellowjackets claimed a 70-64 non-conference win over the Hamilton College Continentals inside Rochester's Louis Alexander Palestra on Friday night, Dec. 5.

  • Hamilton (5-3 overall) played its fifth of a six-game road swing.
  • Rochester (5-3) extended its win streak to five games.


How It Happened

  • Erica Hills '28 scored six points in the third quarter, while Kendall Harris '27 chipped in five as the Continentals outscored the Yellowjackets 18-13 during the third quarter. A 3-pointer by Hannah Bernstein '28 at the 1:20 mark in the third tied the score at 46-46, and the sophomore sank two free throws with 9:03 left in the fourth that gave the Continentals their first lead.
  • Annabelle Semeter '28 converted a fast-break layup with 7:45 left in the fourth and gave Hamilton its largest lead of five points at 54-49, but Rochester scored seven of the next eight points and took back the lead.
  • Rochester's Bridget Miller scored eight points over the final 5:10 and helped the Yellowjackets close it out. A 3-pointer and a driving layup by Harris on consecutive possessions trimmed Hamilton's deficit to 65-64 with 1:33 remaining, but the Yellowjackets scored the final five points.
  • Rochester shot 7-of-13 from the field and 9-for-12 at the line during the fourth quarter.
  • Hamilton shot just 3-of-17 from the field during the opening quarter, but went 7-for-8 at the line and stayed within arms distance of the Yellowjackets. A fast-break layup by Franki Gomez gave the Yellowjackets a 15-7 advantage with 3:11 left in the first.
  • Zoe Myslewicz '28, Abbey Schwoebel '27 and Harris made two free throws each during a 6-0 spurt for the Continentals that cut their deficit to two with 1:45 left in the first. Rochester's Grace Corelli answered with a corner three at the 1:01 mark. Bernstein sank a free throw for the Continentals with 19 seconds left in the opening frame and made it 18-14 after 10 minutes of action.
  • Rochester's full-court pressure forced the Continentals into nine turnovers during the second quarter. The Yellowjackets took their largest lead of nine points at 25-16 with 6:51 left in the second following a steal that led to an Annelise Dexter layup.
  • Following a Hamilton timeout, the Continentals scored the next seven points with layups by Hills and Taylor Lambo '26 sandwiching a 3-pointer by Althea Hill '26.
  • A 6-0 burst by the Yellowjackets gave them a 33-26 lead with 1:28 left in the first half. Maggie Kernodle '29 drained a pull-up jumper with 56 seconds remaining in the second quarter, and Rochester took a 33-28 lead into halftime.

Notes

  • Harris posted a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds, and recorded her second consecutive 20-point outing. She scored a season-high 27 at SUNY Geneseo on Dec. 3. She leads the team with 14.9 per game.
  • Harris posted her second double-double of the season and the 15th of her career.
  • Hills also scored in double figures with 12 points to go along with eight rebounds, three assists and a season-high three steals in a season-high 33 minutes played.
  • Lambo pulled down nine rebounds and distributed a team-high four assists.
  • Hamilton totaled a season-high 50 rebounds and tied its season high with 15 offensive boards.
  • The Continentals converted a season-high 18 free throws on a season-high 24 attempts.
  • Gomez led the Yellowjackets with 15 points and four steals.
  • Rochester shot just 3-of-22 from 3-point range, but scored 48 points in the paint.
  • Rochester claimed its first win over Hamilton since the 2015-16 season. Hamilton had won the previous three meetings.

Hamilton returns to non-conference action at St. Lawrence University (4-2) on Wednesday, Dec. 10.
