BRUNSWICK, Maine – Bowdoin College's Alison Smith posted 19 kills and the Polar Bears defeated the Hamilton College Continentals in four sets (26-24, 23-25, 27-25, 25-17) inside Bowdoin's Morrell Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 4.
Season Update
- Hamilton (3-8, 0-5 NESCAC) dropped its fifth match in a row.
- The Polar Bears (9-6, 2-2) won their fourth straight match.
How It Happened
- The Continentals led 24-21 and had three set points in the first set, but Bowdoin ran off the next five and jumped in front. Mina Mittler ended the set with an ace.
- With the score tied 13-13 in the second set, Kathryn Fox '27 registered a kill and started a 7-1 run for Hamilton. The Polar Bears pulled within a point at 20-19, 21-20 and 24-23. Fox, who had put the Continentals in front for good, finished off the set with a kill.
- Bowdoin led 23-20 in the third set, but Hamilton roared back with four straight points for a 24-23 edge. A Smith kill fought off the first Continentals set point only to face a second one after an attack error. The Polar Bears recorded the next three points on a Hamilton service error and kills by Mittler and Smith as they went up two-sets-to-one.
- Kills by Hannah Woolley and Smith broke a 12-12 tie and put Bowdoin ahead for good in the fourth set. A solo block by Woolley clinched the set and the match.
Notes
- Grace Seaman '29 smacked a season-high 11 kills for the Continentals.
- Fox chipped in 10 kills and three solo blocks. The double-digit kill total was her second in the last three matches.
- Lucy Proud '29 handed out 13 assists and tied a season best with four aces.
- Grace Jansen '29 contributed 12 assists, 10 digs and three aces. Jansen has six double-doubles this fall.
- Zua Vang '29 led the defense with 12 digs and served three aces.
- Amelia Hahn '29 served three of the team's 16 aces.
- Ayzlinn Trefren '28 added 10 digs and Maggie Nichols '26 boasted three blocks.
