Men's soccer ends scoreless string but comes up short at Amherst, 2-1

Ferrare '27 converted a penalty kick in the 72nd minute for the Continentals

AMHERST, Mass. – Amherst College scored twice in a four-minute span early in the second half and the Mammoths hung on for a 2-1 NESCAC win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Amherst's Hitchcock Field on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 18.
 

Season Update

  • Hamilton (5-5-3, 1-5-3 NESCAC) ended its goal drought, scoring for the first time in four matches.
  • The Mammoths (7-3-3, 3-3-2), who were coming off a 2-0 loss at Tufts University on Oct. 14, have lost just once at home.
 

How it Happened

  • It was a tale of two halves with just eight shots during the first 45 minutes, compared to 18 in the second half.
  • In the 57th minute Michael Cherico opened the scoring for Amherst from outside the box with a powerful shot that found the top-left corner of the goal.
  • The Mammoths doubled their advantage in the 61st minute as Mohammed Nuhu dribbled around the goalkeeper and kicked the ball into the open net.
  • In the 72nd minute Aedan Burke '26 drew a foul inside the Amherst box and earned a penalty kick for Hamilton. Patrick Ferrare '27 stepped up and cut the Continentals' deficit in half.
  • Troy Miller '28 had a chance to tie the score in the 88th minute but his low shot was saved by Trey Sheppard. It was the last of five stops by Sheppard in the final 18 minutes of the second half.
 

Notes

  • Ferrare scored his team-leading fifth goal and tops Hamilton with 12 points. He is 3-for-3 on penalty kicks.
  • The Continentals outshot Amherst 15-11. The Mammoths took all four of their corner kicks in the second half.
  • There were four yellow cards and 36 fouls in this physical matchup.

Hamilton makes the short drive to Utica University (7-3-4 overall) for an under-the-lights matchup on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m.
