Volleyball bested by Connecticut College in final home match

Allen '27 led the Continentals with five blocks and served four aces

CLINTON, N.Y. – Connecticut College rallied after dropping the first set and defeated the Hamilton College Continentals in four sets (21-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-22) inside Hamilton's Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 18.
 

Season Update

  • Hamilton (5-10, 1-7 NESCAC) had won its previous two matches, including its first conference win on Oct. 17 against Trinity College.
  • Conn. College (11-8, 3-5) extended its win streak to three matches.
 

How it Happened

  • Grace Jansen '29 delivered four consecutive service aces in the first set as the Continentals built a 13-9 lead. The Camels responded with a 5-0 run, capped by a block assist and a kill by Grace Anderson.
  • A kill by Conn. College's Rae Wartelle evened the score at 20-20, but the Continentals scored five of the next six points and claimed the opening set. Caitlin Allen '27 provided a kill and a service ace in the closing stretch.
  • After a service ace by Hamilton's Zua Vang '29 tied the score for the fifth time in the second set at 13-13, the Camels went on a 5-1 run and did not surrender the lead for the remainder of the set.
  • A kill by Elodie McGeiver '27 followed by an attack error by Conn. College trimmed Hamilton's deficit to 21-18. The Camels scored the next four points, including two kills by Wartelle, and evened the match at one set apiece. Aubrie Letourneau provided 11 assists for the Camels.
  • Conn. College went on a 10-1 run in the third set and took a commanding 18-11 lead. The Camels hit .366, fended off a late Hamilton run and grabbed the victory.
  • Three straight service aces by Allen in the fourth set gave the Continentals a 9-5 advantage. Wartelle recorded three consecutive kills and tied the score at 14-14. An 8-2 burst by Conn. College put the Camels in front 24-19, and Anderson spiked an attack attempt off a set from Letourneau that clinched the match.


Notes

  • Jansen recorded a season-high six service aces and is fifth in the NESCAC with 0.50 per set in conference matches.
  • McGeiver totaled a team-high 11 kills in addition to three blocks for the Continentals.
  • Jansen and Lucy Proud '29 distributed 16 assists apiece.
  • Allen registered five blocks and four aces. She is second among all NESCAC players with 1.14 blocks per set against conference opponents.
  • Ayzlinn Trefren '28 added 12 digs and seven kills for Hamilton.
  • Wartelle and Anderson set new season highs in kills with 19 apiece for Conn. College.
  • Letourneau distributed 47 assists for the Camels, four shy of her season high.
  • Wartelle leads all NESCAC players in kills with 226 on the year, while Letourneau has tallied a league-best 688 assists.
  • The Camels recorded a .268 hitting percentage, their third-best mark in a match this season.
  • Taylor Merrified recorded a match-high 14 digs for Conn. College.

Hamilton takes on the University of Hartford (5-12 overall) at 3 p.m. and Wheaton College (9-13) at 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24 at Hartford.
