Women’s basketball clipped by No. 9/10 Smith in last non-conference game

Continentals host Bates for their NESCAC opener on Sunday, Jan. 12

CLINTON, N.Y. – Smith College took the lead for good with a big run in the third quarter and the Pioneers posted a 69-41 non-conference win against the Hamilton College Continentals on Hamilton's Coach Tom Murphy Court inside Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Tuesday, Jan. 7. 
 

Season Update

  • Hamilton (11-3 overall) had won its last four contests. 
  • Smith (11-1) is ranked ninth in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Top 25 poll and 10th in the D3hoops.com Top 25 poll. The Pioneers extended their win streak to seven games.   

How It Happened

  • Althea Hill '26 netted a 3-pointer to give the Continentals a 5-4 lead with 7:07 left in the opening quarter. 
  • Smith scored the final five points of the quarter for an 11-7 edge. 
  • Taylor Lambo '26 converted a pair of shots at the line and Kendall Harris '27 made a layup that evened the score at 11-11 with 8:16 remaining in the second quarter. 
  • After Hamilton gave up the next basket, Harris scored five straight points on another layup and a 3-pointer for a 16-13 advantage with 4:55 to go. 
  • The Pioneers went on a 7-0 run for a 21-16 advantage with 2:02 left, but Hannah Bernstein '28 closed out the final 42 seconds with two baskets, including an off-the-glass jumper that beat the buzzer at the half. 
  • Two free throws by Lambo and another layup by Bernstein gave the Continentals a 24-23 edge with 7:25 remaining in the third quarter. 
  • The Pioneers silenced the Continentals' momentum with a 19-4 run in the final seven minutes for a 42-28 advantage heading into the final quarter.
  • Smith ran off eight straight points for a comfortable 22-point cushion at 50-28 with 8:06 to go. 
  • The Pioneers were in control the rest of the way and led by as many as 30 at 69-39 with 14 seconds left. 

Notes

  • Harris led the Continentals in scoring with 11 points and added eight rebounds. 
  • Lambo grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds, scored eight points and made three steals. 
  • Hill chipped in eight points while Bernstein added seven. 
  • Smith's Virginia Johnson hit 5-of-6 from the floor, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, for a game-high 13 points off the bench.
  • Ally Landau finished with 11 points and led the Pioneers with seven rebounds, six steals and five assists.
  • Hannah Martin netted 12 points, while Ella Sylvester added 10.
  • Jazmyn Washington grabbed seven rebounds. 
  • Hamilton struggled with shooting, finishing 25.5 percent (14-55) from the floor. The Continentals went 10-for-14 (71.4 percent) at the free-throw line. 
  • Smith shot 47.5 percent (28-59) from the field, but was 19-of-31 in the second half. 
  • The Pioneers carried a 44-31 advantage on the glass. 
  • Smith owned a 30-3 cushion in bench points and tallied 42 points in the paint to Hamilton's 20.

Hamilton hosts nationally ranked Bates College (9-3) for its NESCAC opener on Sunday, Jan. 12 at 1 p.m.
