Late Amherst run hurts women's basketball in road NESCAC setback

Lambo '26 posted her 10th double-double this season for the Continentals

AMHERST, Mass. - Amherst College scored the last nine points and rallied for a 65-58 NESCAC win against the Hamilton College Continentals inside Amherst's LeFrak Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 25.

Season Update

  • Hamilton (13-5, 2-2 NESCAC) dropped its last two games on the road after starting its conference schedule with a 2-0 record.
  • Amherst (13-4, 2-2) has won seven of its eight home contests this season.  

How It Happened

  • Hamilton got out to a 6-0 lead and led 11-9 with 3:41 remaining in the first quarter after two Abbey Schwoebel '27 free throws.
  • Amherst proceeded to go on a 13-4 run and led 22-13 with 5:13 remaining in the second quarter.
  • Later in the second, the Mammoths extended their lead to a game-high 10 points at 27-17 with 2:37 left.
  • Hamilton responded and narrowed the gap to five points at 27-22 going into halftime. Kendall Harris '27 had three points and Taylor Lambo '26 converted a layup.
  • The Continentals continued to close the gap, helped by two layups by Lambo, and tied the score at 30 on a Schwoebel layup off a Harris assist with 5:46 to go in the third quarter.
  • Amherst soon built another lead at 38-31 with 4:24 left in the quarter and 46-37 with 1:40 to go.
  • Hamilton responded with an 8-0 run capped by a Sam Glickman '25 three-pointer with 9:38 remaining in the fourth quarter, and the Mammoths' lead was cut to 46-45.
  • Amherst extended its advantage to 52-47 with 7:41 to go.
  • Hamilton answered with a 7-0 spurt. Glickman made another three-pointer at the 6:07 mark, and the Continentals took their first lead of the second half at 54-52.
  • Hamilton still led by two at 58-56 with 4:03 to go after Harris made a jumper on a pass from Lambo.
  • Amherst closed out the game with a 9-0 run as all their points came at the free-throw line.

Notes

  • Harris led Hamilton with 19 points, including eight in the fourth quarter. She's fifth in the NESCAC with 16.8 points per game.
  • Lambo recorded her 10th double-double this season with 13 points and 13 rebounds, five of which were offensive. She leads the conference with 11.1 per game.
  • Glickman finished with a career-high 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting off the bench.
  • Hannah Bernstein '28 handed out four assists for the Continentals.
  • Laura Mendell paced Amherst with a game-high 20 points and four assists.
  • Maya Cwalina chipped in 16 points and eight blocks.
  • Both teams were under 40 percent from the field, with Hamilton shooting 36.7 percent (22-60) and Amherst shooting 39.2 percent (20-51).
  • The Continentals outrebounded the Mammoths by a slight margin, 38-37.
  • Hamilton held an 18-10 edge in bench points. 
  • The Continentals scored 18 points off 11 Amherst turnovers.
  • Hamilton had won the last four meetings with the Mammoths.

Next Game

The Continentals head back to Hamilton and begin a four-game homestand on Friday, Jan. 31 when they face undefeated Bowdoin College (17-0, 4-0) in a conference matchup at 7 p.m.
