First career hat trick for Tchor '27 leads No. 9 men's hockey past Amherst

Sophomore winger had a hand in all four goals and the Continentals won their seventh straight

CLINTON, N.Y. – Hamilton College's Luke Tchor '27 posted a hat trick and an assist in the Continentals' 4-3 NESCAC win against the Amherst College Mammoths inside Hamilton's Russell Sage Rink on Friday night, Jan. 24.

Season Update

  • The ninth-ranked Continentals (13-3-0, 9-1 NESCAC) extended their win streak to seven games. Hamilton leads the conference standings, five points clear of second-place Trinity College, with 27 points.
  • Amherst (7-7-1, 4-5-1) was playing the last of five consecutive contests on the road.

How It Happened

  • The Continentals scored the first goal and never trailed. Tchor made it 1-0 on a wrist shot from a sharp angle at the bottom of the left faceoff circle 6:19 into the first period.
  • Jacob Pohl tied the score with 3:15 left in the first.
  • Tchor put Hamilton back in front at 6:43 of the second period. He received a pass from Sebastian Hamming '28 near the red line at the right-side boards and skated into the Continentals' attacking zone. Tchor moved from right to left and unleashed a low wrist shot from near the point that snuck under the goaltender.
  • Josh Burke drew the Mammoths even again on a short-handed goal with 9:51 remaining in the period.
  • Tchor played the part of distributor as Hamilton took the lead for good just 18 seconds into the third period. He gained control of the puck in the neutral zone and carried it into the Continentals' offensive end. Tchor skated into the middle of the left faceoff circle and passed the puck through the slot to a wide-open Devon de Vries '27, who scored on a shot from the low slot before the goaltender could recover.
  • Tchor completed his hat trick 5:16 into the third. The puck squirted into the left faceoff circle and de Vries reached it first. He sent a backhand pass to the high slot where Tchor one-timed a slap shot that sailed into the top-right corner and popped the goaltender's water bottle off the top of the net.
  • Oliver Flynn tipped a shot by Ben Ritter past Aksel Reid '27 at 7:33 and pulled Amherst within a goal at 4-3.
  • The Mammoths pulled their goaltender for a sixth skater with a little over a minute to go, but they managed one shot attempt the rest of the way.

Notes

  • The hat trick was Tchor's first at Hamilton, but it was not his first four-point game. He had a goal and three assists in the Continentals' season-opening win against Amherst. Tchor leads the NESCAC with 12 goals and is tied for first with 21 points.
  • Jackson Krock '26, who registered a career-best three helpers, had three goals and an assist in the first game against the Mammoths this season.
  • With a goal and an assist, de Vries recorded his fourth multi-point game this season.
  • James Philpott '25 notched his 50th career assist at Hamilton.
  • William Neault '25 picked up an assist for the fourth time in the last five games and blocked three shots.
  • Hamming added his fifth assist this season.
  • Reid stopped a season-high 29 shots in his second straight start.
  • The Continentals won 47-of-67 faceoffs, led by the performances of Krock (21-of-26) and Max Bulawka '26 (15-of-19).
  • Zack Jesse topped the Amherst offense with two assists. Connor Leslie turned away 28 shots, including 16 in the first period.
  • Hamilton was 0-for-2 on the power play. The Continentals had an opportunity with 3:49 left in the third period.
  • The Mammoths came up empty on their one power-play chance, but tallied the short-handed goal.
  • Hamilton's win streak is its longest since the Continentals also won seven in a row in February and March 2017.
  • Hamilton swept the season series against the Mammoths. The Continentals were 5-2 winners in the season opener at Amherst on Nov. 16. Hamilton has won the last five meetings.
  • The Continentals were playing at home for the first time since Dec. 7.
  • Hamilton wore special jerseys for its Make-A-Wish Charity Game. Fans can bid on their favorite player's jersey until noon on Sunday, Jan. 26 and all proceeds go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Central New York. Click HERE for more information.
