Rockwood '28 hat trick rallies women's hockey past William Smith

Continentals posted their third straight win with 3-1 decision over the Herons

CLINTON, N.Y. – Hamilton College's Bri Rockwood '28 recorded a natural hat trick and the Continentals rallied for a 3-1 non-conference win against the William Smith College Herons inside Hamilton's Russell Sage Rink on Tuesday night, Jan. 21.

Season Update

  • The Continentals (7-8-1 overall) extended their win streak to three games. Hamilton swept the season series as it defeated William Smith 3-0 back on Jan. 7.
  • The Herons (7-9-1) stuffed four consecutive victories between the two losses to the Continentals.

How It Happened

  • Hamilton tied the score 6:11 into the third period. Ava Romano '27 moved the puck along the end boards and tried to throw it out in front but it was stopped on the left side of the net. A scrum ensued in the crease and Rockwood finally stuffed the loose puck past the goaltender who was lying flat on the ice.
  • Rockwood put the Continentals in the lead with 6:45 left. She received a pass from Grace Puskar '27 along the right-side boards and button-hooked in the right faceoff circle. Rockwood skated to the faceoff dot and scored on a wrist shot.
  • Rockwood rounded out the scoring with 4:50 remaining. Cuora Sullivan '26 put the puck on net from above the right faceoff circle but the goaltender couldn't hold it. Romano tapped the rebound into the low slot where the hard-charging Rockwood poked it over the goal line.
  • Colleen Quirk gave William Smith a 1-0 lead on a power-play goal with 19 seconds to go in the second period. Seneca Urban and Bella Hacker had the assists.

Notes

  • Rockwood scored the first three goals of her collegiate career and was the first Continental with a hat trick since Nancy Loh '23 accomplished the feat in the NESCAC championship semifinals against Colby College on March 3, 2023.
  • Romano was the first Hamilton player with three assists in a game since Sami Quackenbush '24 did it on Nov. 25, 2023. It was the first multi-point game of Romano's career.
  • Puskar has at least one point in three straight games. She is second on the team with six assists and eight points.
  • Sullivan, who is a defender, tallied her second helper and third point this season.
  • Evie Sheridan '26 made nine of her 17 saves in the second period. Sheridan was making her first start since Jan. 3.
  • Grace Crowley '26 won 13-of-18 faceoffs.
  • Erin Murray stopped 31 shots for the Herons.
  • Abigail Schum had four of William Smith's 20 blocked shots.
  • The Continentals held a 34-18 shot advantage.
  • The Herons were 1-for-3 on the power play while Hamilton didn't score on its lone opportunity.
  • The Continentals allowed their first power-play goal this season in 32 chances.
