Men’s basketball cruises to 83-60 road win at SUNY Potsdam

The Continentals forced 26 turnovers in their non-conference victory

POTSDAM, N.Y. – Thirteen Hamilton College players scored and the Continentals breezed past the SUNY Potsdam Bears 83-60 in non-conference action inside Potsdam's Jerry Welsh Gymnasium on Tuesday evening, Jan. 21. 
 

Season Update

  • Hamilton (13-4 overall) won its ninth straight contest away from home. 
  • SUNY Potsdam, which is 2-5 in the State University of New York Athletic Conference, dipped to 2-12 overall.  

How It Happened

  • The Continentals jumped out to a hot start, establishing an 11-1 lead 3:31 into the first half. 
  • The Bears cut their deficit to seven points three times over the next 3:21, but the Continentals responded with a 6-2 run, capped by a three-pointer by Sharif Nelson '27 that pushed their lead to 22-11 with 10:56 left in the half.
  • Down 27-15, Potsdam surged with six unanswered points and closed the gap to 27-21 with 4:50 left.
  • Jalen Reese '27 and Owen Kane '25 made layups and extended the lead to 31-21 with just under three minutes remaining. 
  • Graham Robinson '25 beat the buzzer with a tip-in and gave the Continentals a 39-27 advantage heading into the break.
  • Hamilton came out of halftime with energy, rattling off a 10-0 run that stretched its lead to 49-27 with 17:20 left. Morgan scored the first six points, Teja Singh '25 followed with a three-pointer, and Garret Keyhani '26 finished it off with a free throw. 
  • The Continentals built a 28-point lead at 69-41 with 9:50 remaining, fueled by a 7-0 run that started with a three-pointer by Nate Raub '27 and continued with layups by Connor Jenkins '27 and Reese.
  • Rob Cain '28 knocked down three-pointers on consecutive possessions for a commanding 83-58 lead with under a minute to play.

Notes

  • Morgan tallied a team-high 16 points and added seven rebounds and three assists. 
  • Singh was 3-of-5 from beyond the arc and registered 13 points. 
  • Robinson chipped in eight points and a team-high eight boards, including six on the offensive glass. 
  • Reese added eight points and tied a career-high with four steals. 
  • Cain finished with eight points -- all coming in the last three minutes of the second half. 
  • Walter deFreitas paced Potsdam with 20 points and three steals. 
  • Mike Hancock contributed 16 points and six boards. 
  • Nicholas Cortez recorded eight points and handed out a game-high four assists. 
  • Hamilton finished at 41.8 percent (33-79) from the field and went 8-for-12 at the line.
  • The Bears shot 42.2 percent (19-45) from the floor and 94.1 percent (16-17) at the charity stripe. 
  • The Continentals registered 39 bench points to Potsdam's 12. 
  • Hamilton dominated the rebounding battle with a 45-29 advantage, including 29 offensive boards.
  • The Continentals scored 28 points off 26 turnovers by the Bears and finished with 25 second-chance points to Potsdam's six.

Next Game

Hamilton returns to NESCAC action with a home contest against Amherst College (10-6, 1-2) on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 3 p.m.
