CLINTON, N.Y. – Hamilton College's
Abby Weiss '25 registered a career-high three points and
Teagan Brown '27 made 28 saves in the Continentals' convincing 5-0 NESCAC win against the Wesleyan University Cardinals inside Hamilton's Russell Sage Rink on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 18.
Season Update
- The Continentals (6-8-1, 2-5-1 NESCAC) completed the season sweep of Wesleyan as they also shut out the Cardinals 1-0 on Jan. 17.
- Wesleyan (6-10-0, 1-7) dropped its fourth straight and was blanked for the fifth time this season.
How It Happened
- After a scoreless first period, the Cardinals caught a huge break early in the second when two Hamilton players were sent to the penalty box at the same time, handing Wesleyan a 5-on-3 advantage for a full two minutes. The Cardinals mustered just one shot on goal and squandered their golden opportunity.
- The Continentals went on the power play about three minutes later and grabbed a 1-0 lead 8:05 into the second. Katie Allen '26 redirected a shot by Weiss on goal and Sami Smith made a great save but didn't hold it. Grace Puskar '27 poked in the rebound at the top of the crease.
- Ava Romano '27 made it 2-0 with 3:14 left in the period. Bri Rockwood '28 sent a backhand centering pass from behind the goal line and Romano hammered a one-timer from the high slot into the back of the net.
- Jamie Porter '28 scored a back-breaking goal for Hamilton with just 15.8 seconds remaining in the period. Porter, who was set up in the left faceoff circle with her back to the goal, tipped a shot by Sophie Berghammer '26 between her legs and inside the right post for a 3-0 lead.
- Weiss gave the Continentals a four-goal cushion 2:32 into the third period. Carly McMahon '27 passed from the end boards to a wide-open Weiss at the top of the right faceoff circle for the one-timer.
- Gabby Martiniello '28 completed the scoring with 8:11 left. Martiniello came up with the loose puck after an errant pass by Wesleyan in its defensive zone. Sarah Myziuk '28 set up a screen directly in front of the goaltender, and it's likely that Smith never saw Martiniello's high wrist shot from above the left faceoff circle.
