Women's hockey plays No. 14 Colby to 1-1 tie, Heck '28 scores first goal

Continentals won the shootout on a goal by Weiss '25

CLINTON, N.Y. – Hamilton College's Brooke Heck '28 scored in the second period and Teagan Brown '27 made 35 saves as the Continentals and the Colby College Mules played to a 1-1 NESCAC tie inside Hamilton's Russell Sage Rink on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 11.

Season Update

  • The Continentals (4-7-1, 0-5-1 NESCAC) picked up points in the conference standings for the first time this season.
  • Nationally ranked No. 14 Colby (8-2-1, 1-2-1) edged Hamilton 3-2 in overtime on Friday night, Jan. 10.

How It Happened

  • After a scoreless first period, the Continentals grabbed a 1-0 lead 4:25 into the second period. Grace Crowley '26 won an offensive zone faceoff as Lilly Truchon '26 tapped the puck back to Heck above the right faceoff circle. Heck one-timed a slap shot into the back of the net.
  • Hamilton held on to its one-goal edge until midway through the third period. Brown stopped a shot by Georgia Pettygrove but the rebound kicked out to Courtney Schumacher and she swept the puck into the open net with 7:58 left.
  • There easily could have been more goals. The Mules' Maria Pierce hit the crossbar almost seven minutes into the first period during a power play. A shot by Colby's Beth Sinson found the iron with less than two minutes left in the sudden-victory overtime period.
  • The Continentals had five shot opportunities early in overtime as they finished a power play that started with 29.4 seconds remaining in the third. After the Mules killed the penalty, they racked up seven of the eight shot attempts the rest of overtime.
  • In the ensuing shootout, Brown stopped two of Colby's three attempts before Abby Weiss '25 went forehand to backhand and lifted a shot over the stretched-out goaltender on Hamilton's third and final try. Weiss' shootout goal gave the Continentals a 1-0 advantage, which could come in handy at the end of the regular season for tiebreaking procedures for the NESCAC postseason.

Notes

  • Heck's goal was her first collegiate point.
  • Truchon has points in three straight games and four of the last five.
  • Crowley is tied for sixth in the NESCAC with seven assists and leads Hamilton with nine points.
  • Brown stopped 68 of the 72 shots on goal during the weekend.
  • Sophia Rodham '27 and Sophia Testa '26 blocked three shots apiece.
  • Mandy Busky turned away 25 shots for the Mules.
  • Abby Wick won 12-of-17 faceoffs.
  • Anna Staton blocked four shots and Breanna Studley added three.
  • Colby held an 11-5 shot advantage in the third period and added five more in overtime.
  • Both teams were 0-for-3 on the power play. The Continentals have killed all 21 of their opponents' power-play opportunities this season.
