Volleyball drops first two matches at RIT Invitational

McGeiver '27 hammered a career-high 21 kills against SUNY Brockport

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Hamilton College Continentals dropped their first two matches in the 2024 Rochester Institute of Technology Invitational at Clark Memorial Gymnasium on Friday, Sept. 6.
 
SUNY Brockport rallied for a five-set win (22-25, 25-20, 18-25, 25-23, 15-13) against Hamilton before Springfield College swept the Continentals in three sets (25-15, 25-10, 25-18).
 

Season Update

  • Hamilton was playing its first matches of the 2024 season.
  • Brockport (3-1 overall) is a member of the Empire 8 Conference.
  • Springfield (2-1), which is a member of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference, received votes in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III Top 25 poll.

How It Happened
  • After the Golden Eagles took their first lead of the fifth set at 9-8, the Continentals ran off four straight points for a 12-9 advantage.
  • A kill by Drew Stimson '25 made it 13-10 and Hamilton was two points away from clinching the match.
  • Brockport responded by running off the next five points and pulling out the improbable victory. Lauren Emke's kill closed out the match.
  • The Continentals nearly ended the match in the fourth set as a kill by Maggie Nichols '26 gave them a 23-22 edge. The Golden Eagles tallied the next three points including the set winner on a kill by Alexis Sison.
 
Notes
  • Elodie McGeiver '27 led Hamilton with 21 kills – her previous career high was 11 – and added 10 digs.
  • Kendall Scholz '27 chipped in a career-best 16 kills and 16 digs.
  • Stimson finished with 11 kills, four aces and four blocks.
  • Pati Cerda '26 handed out a career-high 46 assists and came up with 11 digs.
  • Mia Jessen '28 led the defense with 21 digs in her first collegiate match.

How It Happened
After winning the first two sets, the Pride didn't leave anything to chance as they opened the third set by recording seven of the first eight points. Springfield eventually led by nine points at 11-2.
 
Notes
  • Scholz topped the Continentals with six kills.
  • Cerda passed out nine assists, Jessen served two aces, Mackenzie Sickinger '28 posted a pair of blocks and Ayzlinn Trefren '28 had a team-high nine digs.
  • The Pride enjoyed a 14-4 advantage in aces and hit .313 (38-12-83) as a team compared to Hamilton's .110 (20-12-73) hitting percentage.
 

Next Match

The Continentals wrap up the RIT Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 7 with matches against Buffalo State College at 1:30 p.m. and the hosts at 4.
